Exterior Features
The 2013 Smart Fortwo is a 2-seat city car sold in coupe or convertible body styles. For 2013, the Fortwo is offered in Pure coupe, Passion coupe, Passion Cabriolet, and new Electric Drive models. Standard equipment for the Pure coupe includes 15-inch steel wheels and manually adjustable side mirrors.

Interior Features
The 2013 Smart Fortwo Pure coupe is equipped with black fabric seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, flat-folding front passenger seat, manual windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and an outside temperature indicator. A radio is not included, but the Smart Fortwo Pure does have 2 speakers and an auxiliary audio input jack.

Packed to the roof, the Smart Fortwo's trunk holds 12 cubic feet of cargo. Normal cargo capacity measures 7.8 cubic feet.

Optional Features
The 2013 Smart Fortwo Passion coupe adds air conditioning, radio with USB port, power heated side mirrors, power windows, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic headlights. The Passion coupe also includes a panoramic glass roof, aluminum wheels, sport steering wheel, and an armrest for the driver. The Smart Fortwo Passion Cabriolet is equipped with a power convertible top with a glass rear window.

The 2013 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive coupe and Cabriolet feature Passion equipment, but swap the sport steering wheel for the standard design and add a trip computer, unique gauges, and electric power steering.

The Pure coupe can be equipped with an optional Cruise Control package that includes cruise control, trip computer, and a sport steering wheel. Additional options include a radio, air conditioning, driver armrest, and electric power steering.

Passion coupes and Cabriolets are offered with a Comfort package (electric power steering, heated black leather seats, cargo cover); Style package (LED running lights, unique aluminum wheels, ambient cabin lighting, upgraded gauges); and a Technology package (navigation, premium sound system).

Options for all Fortwo models include a center console storage area, fog lights, and an anti-theft alarm.

Under the Hood
The Smart Fortwo's 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine is tucked into the back of the vehicle. It generates 70 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 68 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm, operating on premium unleaded fuel. A 5-speed automated manual transmission is standard, driving the rear wheels.

The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive replaces the gasoline engine with a 55-kilowatt electric motor powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery pack. Estimated range is greater than 60 miles, according to Smart, and the Fortwo Electric Drive recharges in 6 hours using a quick-charge 240-volt power outlet. Smart claims that the Fortwo Electric Drive can accelerate to 60 mph in 11.5 seconds.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Smart Fortwo are:

  • Fortwo: 34/38/36 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Fortwo Electric Drive: 100 MPGe

Safety
Smart says that every Fortwo model is equipped with a Tridion safety cell body structure "inspired by race car roll cages." Additionally, the Fortwo coupe is equipped with 8 air bags, while the Fortwo Cabriolet gets 6 air bags. Anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, and hill-start assist are standard, and after a crash the Smart's engine automatically shuts off, the doors unlock, and the hazard lights flash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not performed crash tests on the 2013 Smart Fortwo models, but does assign those equipped with the standard gasoline engine a 3-star (out of 5 stars) rollover-resistance rating. In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2013 Smart Fortwo receives a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap frontal-impact test, "Good" rating for roof crush strength, and an "Acceptable" rating for rear-impact injury prevention. The IIHS has not evaluated the 2013 Smart Fortwo's side-impact protection level.
