The Smart Fortwo's 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine is tucked into the back of the vehicle. It generates 70 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 68 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm, operating on premium unleaded fuel. A 5-speed automated manual transmission is standard, driving the rear wheels.
The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive replaces the gasoline engine with a 55-kilowatt electric motor powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery pack. Estimated range is greater than 60 miles, according to Smart, and the Fortwo Electric Drive recharges in 6 hours using a quick-charge 240-volt power outlet. Smart claims that the Fortwo Electric Drive can accelerate to 60 mph in 11.5 seconds.Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Smart Fortwo are:
- Fortwo: 34/38/36 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Fortwo Electric Drive: 100 MPGe
Smart says that every Fortwo model is equipped with a Tridion safety cell body structure "inspired by race car roll cages." Additionally, the Fortwo coupe is equipped with 8 air bags, while the Fortwo Cabriolet gets 6 air bags. Anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, and hill-start assist are standard, and after a crash the Smart's engine automatically shuts off, the doors unlock, and the hazard lights flash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not performed crash tests on the 2013 Smart Fortwo models, but does assign those equipped with the standard gasoline engine a 3-star (out of 5 stars) rollover-resistance rating. In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2013 Smart Fortwo receives a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap frontal-impact test, "Good" rating for roof crush strength, and an "Acceptable" rating for rear-impact injury prevention. The IIHS has not evaluated the 2013 Smart Fortwo's side-impact protection level.
