The Toyota 4Runner is a midsize sport utility vehicle that was first introduced in the 1984 model year. The first-generation 4Runner was based on a Toyota pickup truck,but with an open cab topped with a removable fiberglass roof. Unlike the crossover RAV4 and Highlander,all 4Runner models are designed for rugged off-road use,with four-wheel drive optional. Today's 4Runner is in its fifth-generation and was last redesigned for the 2010 model year. The automaker has dropped the four-cylinder engine from the lineup.
The 4Runner is offered in three configurations: SR5,Trail,and Limited. The standard SR5 is equipped with air conditioning with rear ventilation,cloth upholstery,full power accessories,cruise control,power-operated rear window,an eight-speaker audio system,17-inch aluminum alloy wheels,and more. The Trail model is designed for outdoorsmen who will be using their 4Runner off road. It upgrades the SR5 with a hood scoop,fender flares,and other cosmetic upgrades. In addition,it features a locking rear differential,off-road tires,water-resistant upholstery,and more. The range-topping 4Runner is called the Limited. Leather upholstery is standard,along with an adaptive suspension,dual-zone climate control,keyless entry and ignition,automatic headlamps,heated front seats,fifteen-speaker JBL audio package,and more.
The Toyota 4Runner is powered by a 4.0-liter,six-cylinder engine that?s rated at 257 horsepower. It is the sole engine choice. The standard transmission is a five-speed automatic. While the standard SR5 is available with 4x2 and 4x4 drivelines,the Trail and Limited models are only offered with the full-time 4x4 powertrain. When properly equipped,the 4Runner can tow 5,000 pounds. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Toyota 4Runner between 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway,depending on powertrain.
