The Porsche 911 is a compact 2-door coupe or convertible sports car that traces its roots back to the mid-1960s. Celebrated as both a race car and street car,the current body style was introduced in 2005. With an all-new 911 model expected for 2012,Porsche nevertheless added a few new models to its 911 lineup for 2011. These include the GTS,Turbo S,GT3 RS,GT2 RS,Speedster,and GT3 RS 4.0 variants.
The 2011 Porsche 911 is sold in no fewer than eighteen different models: 911 Carrera,911 Carrera S,911 Carrera Cabriolet,911 Carrera S Cabriolet,911 Carrera 4,911 Carrera 4S,911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet,911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet,911 Targa 4,911 Targa 4S,911 Turbo,911 Turbo Cabriolet,911 Turbo S,911 Turbo S Cabriolet,911 GT3,911 GT3 RS,911 GT2 RS,and 911 Speedster. All are equipped with standard leather upholstery (or high-grade synthetic suede) and full power accessories. Coupe models are fitted with a fixed steel roof and small rear seats. Cabriolet,or convertible,models have a power-operated,folding cloth roof with a heated glass rear window. Targa models have a full-length glass roof that can be opened at the touch of a button. The GT3 and GT2 models are tuned for the enthusiast,with spartan interiors and additional high-performance equipment.
The 2011 Porsche 911 is offered with one of seven different engines. The standard power plant in base Carrera models is a 3.6-liter flat-6 engine rated at 345 horsepower. Carrera S models are fitted with a 3.8-liter flat-6 engine rated at 385 horsepower. Turbo models feature a twin-turbo,3.8-liter flat-6 engine rated at 500 or 530 horsepower (Turbo and Turbo S,respectively). The GT3 is equipped with a naturally aspirated,3.8-liter flat-6 engine rated at 435 horsepower,while the flagship GT2 RS boasts a twin-turbocharged,3.6-liter flat-6 engine rated at 620 horsepower. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard,with a 7-speed dual-clutch (PDK) transmission optional on most models. Rear-wheel drive is standard,with all-wheel drive optional on most variants.
