The Ford Expedition is a full-size sport utility vehicle that was introduced in 1997. The Expedition shares platforms with the Ford F-150 pickup truck. The Expedition used to be the second-largest truck in the automaker's lineup, but it became the largest when the Excursion was discontinued in 2005. Furthermore, with the 2011 Explorer now built on a unibody platform, the Expedition is the automaker's last large ""truck-based"" SUV. The current Ford Expedition is the third-generation model, last redesigned for the 2007 model year. Bigger than its predecessor,it was offered with two wheelbases (""EL"" is the extended model, which is 15 inches longer to increase interior room) to make up for the absence of the Excursion. Standard Expedition models are rear-wheel drive (2WD),with 4-wheel drive (4WD) optional across the board. For 2011,Ford has left the mechanical aspects alone, but updated the SUV's electronics with the latest version of Sync,HD radio, and a new headrest-mounted DVD system. The Eddie Bauer trim level has also been discontinued for 2011.
The 2011 Ford Expedition is offered in both standard and extended ?EL? chassis lengths, and in four trim levels: XL,XLT,Limited, and King Ranch. The Expedition XL is fitted with air conditioning with rear controls, cloth upholstery, full power accessories, cruise control,6-speaker audio system,17-inch alloy wheels, and more. The XLT is upgraded with a third-row seat,back-up sensors,power-adjustable pedals,18-inch alloy wheels, and other amenities. The Limited is fitted with leather upholstery,20-inch alloy wheels, power liftgate,back-up camera, and more. The range-topping Expedition King Ranch features unique two-tone paint, upgraded ""Chapparal"" leather, wood trim, and painted 20-inch alloy wheels.
The 2011 Ford Expedition is fitted with a standard 5.4-liter V-8,engine rated at 310 horsepower. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels in standard configuration. Four-wheel drive is optional, and it comes fitted with a dual-range transfer case for better off-road capabilities. When properly equipped, the 2011 Ford Expedition is able to tow upwards of 9,200 pounds, according to Ford. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Ford Expedition between 13 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, depending on chassis, engine and transmission.
The 2011 Ford Expedition XL 2WD starts at a base price of around $36,500,and the model range tops out with the Expedition EL King Ranch 4WD,which starts at around $50,000.
