2011 Chevrolet Volt Hatchback

The Chevrolet Volt,a brand new entry for 2011,is a hybrid vehicle that relies principally on its electric motor, particularly on journeys of less than 35 miles round-trip. A small, conventional gasoline engine provides power to the electric motor when the lithium-ion battery runs down. The Volt is a 5-door hatchback that seats 4 occupants.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt comes in a single trim. Its standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, keyless entry and ignition, cruise control, manually adjustable front seats,a touch-screen navigation system with voice controls, and a 6-speaker Bose sound system. Options include the Premium package, which upgrades to leather upholstery with heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Another option package includes a rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors. The area behind the rear seats provides 10.6 cubic feet of cargo space, according to Chevrolet, and the rear seats fold down to provide a little more room.

A 1.4-liter,4-cylinder gasoline engine that takes premium fuel is the backup power source, taking over when the electric battery charge is 70% depleted. The primary source of power is an electric motor that produces 149 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. It?s almost impossible to put a number on fuel efficiency, because it would depend on how the car is used. If used exclusively for short journeys, then in most cases no gasoline will be consumed. On long trips where the gasoline engine is the principal source of power,it?s been suggested that about 30 mpg is a good estimate. A full electrical charge can be accomplished in about 4 hours using a dedicated 240-volt line,or 10 hours using a standard 120-volt line, according to the manufacturer.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt include anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, front side and front knee air bags, side curtain air bags, and the OnStar emergency communications system.

Starting MSRP for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt was $40,280.
