The Toyota 4Runner is a midsize,traditional truck-based SUV,not a crossover. It underwent an extensive redesign for 2010,mainly to produce a smoother on-road experience,but the SUV is still capable of rugged off-road use.

Three trim levels are available for the 2010 Toyota 4Runner. The base 4Runner SR5 features 17-inch alloy wheels,air conditioning,cruise control,power accessories,skid plates,and a sound system. Adding a V-6 engine and/or 4-wheel drive (4WD) brings a few extra enhancements. The 4Runner Trail trim adds the V-6 and 4WD to the standard drivetrain,as well as a special off-road suspension,locking rear differential,more power accessories,sliding rear cargo deck,water-resistant upholstery,and a long list of performance features. The 4Runner Limited trim loses the off-road suspension but features 20-inch alloy wheels,proprietary adaptive suspension dampers,automatic headlights,dual-zone automatic climate control,leather upholstery,a 15-speaker sound system,and much more. A voice-activated navigation system,sunroof,and a third-row seat are stand-alone options.

Standard on all 2010 Toyota 4Runner models except the base SR5 is a 270-horsepower,4.0-liter V-6 engine with a 5-speed automatic transmission,which delivers 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway with rear-wheel drive (2WD),according to the EPA. With 4WD,which is optional on the 4Runner SR5 and Limited and standard on the Trail,the gas mileage is 17 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. The 4Runner SR5 with 2WD employs a 157-horsepower,2.7-liter,inline 4-cylinder engine.

Standard safety features on the 2010 Toyota 4Runner include anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist,stability control,traction control,active front head restraints,front side air bags,side curtain air bags,and front knee air bags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 4Runner its highest-possible ?Good? ratings in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests. In government crash tests,the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded 5 out of 5 stars for driver protection and 4 stars for front-passenger protection in front-impact tests,and 5 stars across the board in side-impact tests.
