First introduced for the 2000 model year, the Insight is now a hatchback that seats five. In the hybrid field,it completes mainly with the Toyota Prius.
The 2010 Honda Insight is available in two trim levels: LX and EX. They differ little on the exterior, save that the EX has alloy wheels. The LX has 15-inch steel wheels, automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, power locks and windows, and a four-speaker sound system. The EX trim adds two speakers, stability control, cruise control,a center console, paddle shifters and audio controls on the steering wheel, and an optional voice-activated navigation system with Bluetooth connectivity. On both trim levels, the back seat folds down to create a maximum of 31.5 cu. ft. of cargo space.
The hybrid power plant combines an 88-hp,1.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine,a 13-hp electric motor, and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Maximum overall output is 98 hp. and 123 lb.-ft. of torque. Honda explains that when the vehicle is running solely on electrical power, the gas engine?s crankshaft continues to rotate, thus eliminating the variability of engine noise that some people find objectionable on hybrid cars. According to EPA estimates, the 2010 Honda Insight delivers 40 mpg in the city,43 mpg on the highway, and 41 mpg combined.
Standard safety features include antilock front disc brakes, rear drum brakes, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Stability and traction control are standard with the EX trim. In frontal offset and side impact tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Insight ?Good? ratings.
The 2010 Honda Insight started with an MSRP of $19,800.
