Introduced to the American market in 1972 as a two-door subcompact coup?,and shortly thereafter as a hatchback,the Honda Civic has evolved over several generations into a more upscale compact car. Today,the Civic is available in both coup? and sedan format. However,Honda still stresses the Civic?s value quotient and high fuel efficiency. In terms of size,the Civic is positioned between the Accord and the Fit,and it competes with the Toyota Corolla,Nissan Sentra,and others.
The basic vehicle is the Honda Civic sedan or coup?,and upgrades include the Civic Si sedan or coup?. The Civic Hybrid is available only as a sedan. The natural-gas-powered Civic GX was offered only to approved dealers in California,New York,and Utah.
The basic Civic has four trim levels,from the basic DX to the LX,EX,and the fully featured EX-L (L for ?leather?). DX and LX have 15-inch wheels,with 16-inch wheels available at the EX level. Options at various levels include keyless entry,cruise control,full power accessories,and leather upholstery. Other options include a power moonroof,rear deck spoiler,and chrome exhaust finisher. The Civic Si is the sportier model,and features 17-inch wheels,firmer suspension,and upgraded seats. The GX model approximates the LX trim,while the Hybrid is similar to the EX trim level.
The upper trim levels of the Civic feature four-wheel disc brakes,while other models have drum brakes. Stability control is standard with the EX-L,Hybrid,and Si.
The basic power plant is a 140-hp,1.8-liter four-cylinder engine,coupled with a five speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The natural gas engine in the GX provides 113 hp. The engine in the hybrid is a 110-hp,1.3-liter four-cylinder,while the Si gets a 197-hp,2.0-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed manual transmission.
Starting MSRP for the 2010 Honda Civic ranges from $16,600 to $21,900.
