Originally a coup? when introduced in the mid-1990s,the Dodge Avenger has been reincarnated as a family sedan. Today,the Avenger is a midsize car,sportier than a Sebring and smaller than a Charger,it is comparable to the Kia Optima or the Ford Fusion. For 2010,Chrysler adds a new trim level,the Express,as its mid-line offering.

The base SE trim has been discontinued,leaving the SXT as the entry-level trim. The SXT has full power accessories,air conditioning,a basic CD audio system,and 16-inch wheels. The Express trim has 17-inch wheels,heated front seats (with eight-way power for the driver seat),upgraded sound system with onboard music storage and touch screen interface,foldaway mirrors,and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The R/T level adds leather upholstery and a rear spoiler,but the touch screen stereo is only available as an option. Other R/T options include a multimedia package with premium stereo and navigation systems,18-inch chrome wheels,automatic climate controls,and remote ignition.

The 2010 Avenger comes with front-wheel drive,a 173-hp,2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine,and a four-speed automatic transmission. On the R/T,a 235-hp,3.5 liter V6 engine is optional and accompanied by a six-speed automatic transmission. The EPA estimates that the SXT will deliver 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway,while the R/T with the V6 engine will deliver 16 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes,front-seat side airbags,and full-length side curtain airbags,with stability control optional on the R/T trim. In NHTSA tests,the Avenger receives five stars for front impact,and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Avenger ?Good? ratings on all tests.
