A mid-engine,all-wheel-drive luxury sports coup?,the Audi R8 was designed by the automaker?s high-performance subsidiary,and is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform. The R8,which is known for its signature side blades,is powered by a 4.2-liter 420 hp V8 engine. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard,as are xenon headlights,LED brake lights and turn signals,retractable rear spoiler,power sports seats with leather and Alcantara upholstery,and a stereo system with Bluetooth connectivity and a six-CD changer.

A Bang & Olufsen premium stereo is optional,as is Nappa leather upholstery,exterior styling panels,and a navigation system. The Convenience Package adds parking sensors,auto-dimming mirrors,and a ?hill holder? feature for models with manual transmissions. Six-speed manual and automated manual transmissions are available; the latter with a fully automatic mode. The automated manual has a computer-controlled clutch and can be shifted manually via a shift lever or by paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

Audi?s trademark trapezoidal grille is prominent on the R8,as are the front air intakes. The R8 measures 174.5 in. long,75 in. wide,and 49.3 in. high. It features a front trunk of 3.5 cu. ft.,and additional storage space behind the back seats.

The V8 engine delivers 317 lb. -ft. of torque,and by design,56% of engine power is delivered to the rear wheels. The R8 features an adaptive four-wheel-independent suspension. The Audi Magnetic Ride system quickly changes the damping properties of the shock absorber fluid via an electrical charge. The driver may select a comfort mode or a performance mode. Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes,stability control,and seat-mounted airbags. EPA estimates for the R8 are 13 mpg city,20 mpg highway,and 15 mpg combined with the manual transmission.

When introduced,the 2009 Audi R8 started at $110,000.
