While Subaru made news with the introduction of a new sport utility vehicle, the B9 Tribeca, its compact Forester crossover SUV,which has been in the market for several years, got the spruce-up treatment. The 2.5-liter ""Boxer"" (flat,horizontally-opposed) base engine has been boosted from 165 to 173 horsepower, making use of an i-Active Valve Lift System. Subaru's turbocharged engine,in the 2.5 XT model, now is rated at 230 horsepower (up 20). The Forester lineup now consists of four versions: 2.5 X,2.5 X with Premium Package (which replaces last year's highline XS),L.L. Bean, and turbocharged 2.5 XT. The 2006 Foresters reached dealerships in June.
