In the wake of the lackluster sales totals for its Aztek crossover wagon,which drew more derision than praise for its idiosyncratic design,Pontiac took a more traditional path with the Torrent. Pontiac's newest Sport Utility Vehicle is structurally related to the Saturn Vue and the more recent Chevrolet Equinox,based on a car rather than truck platform. Compact but sizable like its GM siblings,the Torrent also uses a V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available. The all-wheel drive system works automatically to enhance traction on slippery surfaces,but it lacks low-range gearing so beloved by serious off-roaders.
