Mitsubishi's Montero is one of the last ""old-school"" full-sized SUVs. Its aging design does not offer the same interior utility as a Chevrolet Tahoe or Toyota Sequoia and, although its upright dimensions make for impressive headroom, hip and shoulder room are in short supply. The Montero also lacks a V8 engine,a major issue in this segment. On the flip side, while most manufacturers have altered their SUVs to emulate the ride and handling characteristics of a car as much as possible, the Montero remains a true off-road champion, capable of tackling the most inhospitable terrain. Its sophisticated all-wheel-drive system places it in a league with such worthy off-road vehicles as the Land Rover LR3 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
