For decades,Mercury has issued upscale cousins of Ford products, and the brand-new Milan is the latest example of that timeworn tradition. Closely related to the also-new Ford Fusion, the front-wheel-drive Milan sedan is considered to be Mercury's first entrant into the midsize field in a decade. In the eyes of Mercury promoters, the now-defunct Sable wasn't really a true midsize car, slotting a step up on the automotive food chain. Ranking as the most affordable Mercury model, the Milan targets a more youthful audience?specifically, members of Generation X. According to Mercury marketers, the name is intended to connote a modern, fashionable European city. The fact that it starts with ""M"" doesn't hurt either.
