The Grand Marquis is the patriarch of the Mercury line-up (it's been in production since 1975),yet shows no sign of giving up anytime soon. One would think the introduction of the full-size Mercury Montego, with its state-of-the-art design, optional all-wheel drive and fuel-efficient V6 might be the Grand Marquis' undoing, but this is not the case. A large number of senior citizens, most with very deep pockets, have managed to keep one of the last of the Detroit dinosaurs alive. Who can blame them? The Grand Marquis delivers a pillow-soft ride,a strong V8,a truly cavernous trunk and a formidable highway presence, along with?and we're not making this up?exemplary ruggedness and dependability. The Grand Marquis, and its Ford Motor Company siblings the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car,are the last of the four-door sedans with a separate body-on-frame,rear-wheel drive and a big V8 engine. After all, what do they use for taxicabs and police cruisers?
