The XLR hasn't been the success Cadillac expected. Despite its razor-sharp styling and Corvette-inspired chassis, the XLR swims in a small pool filled with elite,well-established competitors. In Cadillac's eyes, the XLR is a bargain, offering a high-performance hardtop convertible for thousands less than the Mercedes-Benz SL. In the public's eyes, the XLR's $77,295 price tag places it at or above a Jaguar XK or Lexus SC,two premium convertibles that have long histories to justify their lofty fees. Memories of Cadillac's last convertible, the poorly received Allante, may still linger in the minds of long-time Cadillac buyers, causing them to shy away from the XLR.
