Overview
The Volvo XC90 was introduced in 2003 as the first SUV in the manufacturer's lineup, designed to compete against the BMW X5, Infiniti FX and Volkswagen Touareg. Unlike the competition when it debuted, the midsized XC90 offered up to 7-passenger seating. A comprehensive list of standard safety features set the XC90 apart, including an ultra high-strength Boron steel-reinforced passenger compartment. At its introduction, the XC90 was available with a choice of turbocharged 5- or 6-cylinder powerplants. Those were eventually replaced with a normally aspirated 6-cylinder engine and a Yamaha-sourced 8-cylinder engine. The XC90 received a mid-life facelift in 2007 when the front and rear fascias were restyled and the interior appointments upgraded. For 2009, the biggest change is the addition of the 3.2 and V8 R-Design models, which add a long list of R-Design elements to the XC90s. The V8 Sport model has been discontinued for 2009. A second-generation XC90 was rumored for the 2010 model year, but financial trouble at parent Ford Motor Company could delay the redesigned model.

All 2009 Volvo models are covered by a 4-year/50,000-mile comprehensive Volvo New Car Warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile corrosion warranty. Volvo On-Call Roadside Assistance is standard for the first four years of ownership.

Model Lineup
There are four Volvo XC90 models for 2009: XC90 3.2 front-wheel drive, XC90 3.2 R-Design front-wheel drive, XC90 V8 AWD, and XC90 V8 AWD R-Design. The XC90 3.2 is offered with 6-cylinder power while the XC90 V8 features an 8-cylinder engine.

Standard equipment on all models includes power windows and locks; dual-zone electronic climate control; memory feature for the power driver's seat; electronic climate control; tire-pressure-monitoring system; steering-wheel-mounted audio controls; flat-folding 40/20/40-split second-row seat; and a high-performance 160-watt, 8-speaker, MP3-capable audio system. For the V-8 AWD model, additional standard features include leather seating surfaces (optional on the 3.2 model). Otherwise, all standard features are the same on the 3.2 and V8 models; the difference between those two is the engine size.

The XC90 3.2 offers several option packages: Climate package, Convenience package, Premium package, Technology package, Galateia 19-inch Wheel package, and Versatility package (which requires the Premium package). The 3.2 R-Design also offers all of the above packages, excluding the Premium, Galateia, and Versatility packages.

The Climate package includes heated front seats, headlight washers, and a rain sensor function. The Convenience package adds Volvo's navigation system, power retractable rearview mirrors, rear Park Assist, and an interior air quality system. The Galateia Wheel package adds 8 x 19-inch alloy wheels, speed-sensitive steering, and body-colored fender extensions. The Premium package includes leather seating surfaces, a power glass sunroof, power passenger seat, and an in-dash 6-disc CD changer. The Technology package features Volvo's premium Dynaudio sound system, dual high-intensity-discharge headlamps with Active Bending, Sirius satellite radio, and rear-seat headphone jacks and audio controls. The Versatility package (requires the Premium package) adds third-row leather seats, third-row air conditioning, the Nivomat self-leveling suspension, and a second-row integrated child booster cushion.

The V8 model is available with the same climate, convenience and technology packages, but adds an Executive package. The Executive package adds 19-inch "Alastor" alloy wheels, massaging/ventilated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, wood inlays, wood steering wheel, different tailpipe, and a Rainsensor function and softer leather interior materials.

For 2009, Volvo has added the R-Design models to the XC90 lineup. R-Design is the sporty moniker for the Volvo brand, and on the XC90 3.2 includes performance-tuned suspension and steering, R-design exterior grille and badges, unique watch dial instruments, leather-upholstered third-row seats, exclusive exterior colors, and silver roof rails among other features. The R-Design V8 adds split dual exhaust tips and 20-inch "Cratus" wheels in addition to the R-Design elements mentioned for the 3.2.Stand-alone options on 3.2 models include AWD with Instant Traction, and either a wood-trimmed or leather-wrapped steering wheel. Metallic paint is optional for all XC90 models.

Powertrain
The 2009 Volvo XC90 is offered with two different engine choices. The base engine is a 3.2-liter 6-cylinder rated at 235 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. In standard trim, it powers the front wheels only. Optional with the 6-cylinder engine is an electronically controlled AWD system with Instant Traction. Either 3.2 driveline choice comes with a standard 6-speed "Geartronic" driver-adaptive automatic transmission. EPA fuel-economy estimates for 2009 are identical for both drivelines: 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway. The XC90 V8 models are equipped with a 4.4-liter 8-cylinder engine rated at 311 hp and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. It shares the same 6-speed automatic transmission as found on the 3.2 model, but with a slightly different final drive ratio for better off-the-line performance. With the larger powerplant, EPA fuel-economy estimates for 2009 are 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway.

The Volvo XC90 is built on a unibody platform with independent front and rear suspension. The front employs a MacPherson strut and coil spring design, while the rear features a multi-link setup with coil springs. A Nivomat self-leveling rear suspension is optional on the 3.2 models, and standard on the V8 models. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking (ABS) is standard across the lineup. The V8 models feature standard electronically controlled all-wheel drive with Instant Traction. That system is available as a stand-alone option for 3.2 models. Standard on all XC90 models is Volvo's Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) system that helps keep the vehicle moving on its intended path in the event of wheelspin or understeer or oversteer situations, Volvo says.

Safety
In addition to a high-strength Boron steel-reinforced passenger compartment, all 2009 Volvo XC90s offer a comprehensive array of safety features. Dual-stage front air bags (SRS) and Volvo's standard Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side air bags (SIPS Bags II) help protect front passengers from injury. An Inflatable Curtain (IC) extends the length of the passenger compartment to protect all three rows of occupants. All seat belts are equipped with 3-point inertia-reel belts with automatic pre-tensioners, and every XC90 comes standard with stability and traction control, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system. The ISO-FIX attachment for rear-facing child safety seats is standard on all models with an integrated child booster seat
