Overview

What's New
Both the V70 and XC70 get standard Dynamic Stability Traction Control, a tire-pressure-monitoring system, new side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and simplified option and package choices for 2007. A dual-screen DVD entertainment system is now a stand-alone option. The high-performance V70R model has been discontinued for 2007; it will return when Volvo introduces new versions of the V70 and XC70 for 2008 and will be based on the new-for-2007 S80 sedan.

Overview
Though it has been out of production for well over a decade, Volvo's boxy 240 wagon remains one of the most easily identifiable cars on the road today. Volvo's old wagons were not much to look at, but they had a reputation for utility and safety-a tradition continued with today's V70 and XC70 wagons.

Though both are based on the same platform, the V70 is designed purely as a car, while the XC70 is closer to a crossover utility vehicle in the vein of Subaru's Outback and Audi's Allroad Quattro. Unique styling, aggressive body trim, and a higher stance differentiate the XC70 from the V70, but not all of the differences are purely decorative; the XC70 features all-wheel drive in place of the V70's front drive and aluminum underbody skid plates to protect the machinery when adventuring off-road.

The V70 is available in three trim levels: 2.4, with a 168-hp 5-cylinder engine and manual or automatic transmission; and 2.5T, with a 208-hp engine and automatic transmission. The XC70 is available in a single trim level, powered by the same 208-hp engine as the V70 2.5T. (The high-performance V70R model has been dropped from the lineup for 2007; it will return when the redesigned V70 makes its debut in early 2008, following the fall 2007 launch of the all-new 2008 XC70.)

Volvo's reputation for safety is enhanced for 2007; along with a full complement of air bags (front, front-seat side, and two-row side curtain) and 4-wheel anti-lock disk brakes, the V70 adds Dynamic Stability Traction Control and a tire-pressure-monitoring system to its long list of standard safety equipment.

The Competition
The Volvo V70 and XC70 compete in the Midsize Premium Conventional segment, which consists of 12 models. Buyers in this segment look for quality, performance, and reliability, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Lexus ES Series (75,987 units sold), BMW 5 Series (56,756), and Mercedes-Benz E-Class (50,195). The Volvo V70 and XC70 sold a combined 18,734 units in 2006, a decrease of 12.4 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Midsize Premium Conventional segment include the Lexus GS Series, Cadillac STS, Infiniti M-Series, Audi A6, and Acura RL.
