The Volvo S80 was first introduced in 1997 as a replacement for the Volvo 960. The first-generation S80 was designed on a front-wheel-drive (FWD) platform and later equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD). The S80 was unique in that it offered a transversely mounted inline-6 powerplant-an uncommon engine arrangement, but a necessary contributor to the high safety ratings the S80 earned. The original S80 also set Volvo's current design themes in motion, changing the brand's image from boxy to sleek. Last redesigned for 2007
, the 2009 Volvo S80 continues on as before but with even more standard features.Model Lineup
The standard Volvo S80 3.2 and the mid-range S80 T6 AWD share much of the same equipment and options list, with primary differences being the latter's turbocharged engine and all-wheel-drive system. Both models include leather upholstery, genuine wood dash inlays, power glass sunroof, and dual-zone electronic climate control. The up-level S80 V8 adds an optional wood steering wheel, upgraded leather upholstery, Personal Car Communicator with Keyless Drive, and distinguishing exterior trim upgrades. The standard audio package for all models is a 160-watt, high-performance sound system with a 6-disc CD changer, MP3 capability, and 8 speakers. All S80 models feature 17-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment, and for 2009 every S80 receives standard Bluetooth hands-free connectivity along with rain-sensing windshield wipers, and dual Xenon active bending headlamps.
Option packages include the Climate package with heated front and rear seats, heated windshield washer nozzles and headlamp cleaning. There's also a Convenience package, a Collision Avoidance package, a Technology package, and an Executive package. The top-end Executive package includes massaging, ventilated front seats; additional exterior and interior chrome trim pieces; 17-inch "Meissa" alloy wheels; and a power front passenger seat adjustment. Stand-alone options include a DVD-based Volvo Navigation System, dual-screen rear-seat entertainment, and a blind-spot information system.Powertrain
Each 2009 Volvo S80 model is equipped with a different engine. The S80 3.2 features a 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine rated at 235 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway. The S80 T6 AWD features a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with a twin-scroll turbocharger. It is rated at 281 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque with EPA fuel-economy estimates of 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway. The flagship S80 V8 AWD benefits from a 4.4-liter V-8 engine, rated at 311 hp and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the only Volvo sedan to ever be powered by a V-8 engine. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway. Electronically controlled AWD with Instant Traction is standard on the S80 T6 and S80 V8 models.
All Volvo S80 models share similar transmission, suspension and brakes. The transmission is a 6-speed "Geartronic" driver-adaptive automatic with manual shift modes. The suspension is independent front and rear, with available electronically controlled hydraulic shock absorbers with three driver-selectable settings: Comfort, Sport and Advanced. Brakes are hydraulic disc brakes on all four corners with ABS, brake assist, and Fading Brake Support (FBS) systems standard.Safety
The 2009 Volvo S80's driver and front passenger are protected by dual-threshold frontal air bags and side-impact air bags. Integrated into the front seats is Volvo's Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), designed to cradle the neck and spine in a rear impact. All models are equipped with Volvo's Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) including inflatable side curtain air bags and rigid side-impact tubes inside the doors, and all seating positions feature 3-point safety belts with pre-tensioners.
Active safety features standard across the Volvo S80 model range include ABS with electronic brake assistance (EBA) and dynamic stability and traction control (DSTC). Emergency brake lights (EBL), standard on every S80, are designed to blink rapidly if the system senses panic braking, which reduce the chances of a collision by offering an early warning to drivers following an S80. Volvo On-Call Roadside Assistance is standard for the first four years of ownership on all models.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS
) has named the Volvo S80 a "Top Safety Pick," rating it "Good" in frontal offset, side-impact, and rear-impact crash tests (electronic stability control is also required to achieve a Top Safety Pick accolade). As of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
) has not yet crash tested the Volvo S80.Technology
The blind-spot information system (BLIS), optional on all Volvo S80 models for 2009, is designed to assist the driver in monitoring the blind spots outside the vehicle. Using rear-facing digital cameras, BLIS monitors traffic on each side of the vehicle. If a motorcycle or larger vehicle is occupying the blind spot, the system alerts the driver with a discreet lamp built into the front door post, Volvo says. The system operates at speeds above 6 mph, and is effective day or night, the automaker claims. BLIS, combined with the use of exterior mirrors during maneuvering, is designed to drastically reduce lane-change incidents and accidents.
