Overview
The Volvo S80 was first introduced in 1997 as a replacement for the Volvo 960, a 5-passenger, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) sedan. The first-generation S80 was designed on a front-wheel-drive (FWD) platform and later equipped with all-wheel-drive (AWD). The S80 was unique in that it offered a transversely mounted inline-6 powerplant-an uncommon engine arrangement, but a necessary contributor to the high safety ratings the S80 earned. Now in its second generation, the new-for-2007 S80 enters the 2008 model year offering a new turbocharged engine, upgraded interior appointments, and even more standard features.

Model Lineup
The standard FWD Volvo S80 3.2 and the S80 T6 AWD share much of the same equipment and options list. These include leather upholstery with genuine wood inlays, power glass sunroof, and dual-zone electronic climate control. The S80 V8 adds an optional wood steering wheel, upgraded leather upholstery, Personal Car Communicator with Keyless Drive, and distinguishing exterior trim upgrades. The standard audio package for all models is a 160-watt high-performance sound system with a 6-disc CD changer, MP3 capability, and 8 speakers. All S80 models feature 17-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment.

Options packages on the 2008 S80 include the Climate package with heated front and rear seats; heated windshield wash nozzles; rain-sensor wipers; and headlamp cleaning. The Dynaudio package upgrades the standard sound system to Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround Sound with 12 speakers and Sirius satellite radio. The Sport package adds electronically controlled suspension; perforated and ventilated front seats; active bi-Xenon headlamps; speed-sensitive steering; and 18-inch Zubra alloy wheels with performance tires. Other stand-alone options include the DVD-based Volvo Navigation System; dual-screen rear-seat entertainment; and Blind Spot Information System.

Powertrain
All three Volvo S80 models for 2008 are equipped with a different engine. The FWD S80 3.2 features a 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine rated at 235 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA fuel economy estimates are 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway. The new-for-2008 S80 T6 AWD introduces a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with a twin-scroll turbocharger. It is rated at 281 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque with EPA fuel economy estimates of 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway. The flagship S80 V8 AWD benefits from a 4.4-liter V-8 engine, rated at 311 hp and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA fuel economy estimates are 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway. Electronically controlled AWD with Instant Traction is standard on the S80 T6 and S80 V8 models.

All 2008 Volvo S80 models share similar transmission, suspension and brakes. The transmission is a 6-speed "Geartronic" driver-adaptive automatic with manual shift modes. The suspension is independent front and rear, with available electronically controlled hydraulic shock absorbers with three driver-selectable settings: Comfort, Sport, and Advanced. Brakes are hydraulic disc brakes on all four corners with anti-lock control (ABS), brake assist (HBA), and Fading Brake Support (FBS) systems standard.

Safety
The Volvo S80's driver and front passenger are protected by dual-threshold frontal air bags and side-impact air bags (SIPSBAGS II). Integrated into the front seats is Volvo's Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), designed to cradle the neck and spine in a rear impact. All models are equipped with Volvo's Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) including inflatable curtain air bags and rigid side-impact tubes, and all seating positions feature 3-point safety belts with pre-tensioners. ISOFIX baby/child rear-seat attachments are standard on all models.

Active safety features standard across the 2008 Volvo S80 model range include ABS with electronic brake assistance (EBA) and dynamic stability and traction control (DSTC). Emergency brake lights (EBL), standard on every S80, are designed to blink rapidly if the system senses panic braking. EBL offers an early warning to those drivers following an S80, reducing the chances of a collision. Volvo On-Call Roadside Assistance is standard for the first four years of ownership on all models.

Technology
The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), optional on all 2008 Volvo S80 models, is designed to assist the driver in monitoring the blind spots outside the vehicle. Using rear-facing digital cameras, BLIS monitors traffic on each side of the vehicle. If a motorcycle or larger vehicle is occupying the blind spot, the system alerts the driver with a discreet lamp built into the front door post. The system operates at speeds above 6 mph, and is effective day or night. BLIS, combined with the use of exterior mirrors during maneuver, is designed to drastically reduce lane-change incidents and accidents.
