Overview
The first-generation S40, an entry-level compact luxury car from Volvo, was introduced in 1995. Based on a European Mitsubishi Carisma platform (but sharing few parts with its counterpart), the small sedan emphasized safety, ergonomics and economy. The second-generation S40 debuted in late 2005. It was built on an all-new platform developed by Volvo's parent, Ford Motor Company, which was shared with the Mazda 3 and the European version of the Ford Focus. For 2009, the front- or all-wheel-drive (AWD) S40 receives only minor changes. All Volvo models are covered by a 4-year/50,000-mile comprehensive Volvo new-car warranty.

Model Lineup
The three Volvo S40 models are: S40 2.4i, S40 T5, and S40 T5 AWD. For 2009, the entry 2.4i now comes with a standard 5-speed automatic transmission, 17-inch "Spartacus" wheels, front fog lights, power moonroof, power driver's seat, and a trip computer. On this model, most accessories are power operated, air conditioning is standard, and Volvo's Performance Audio System with MP3/WMA/CD functionality is included. Leather upholstery is optional on the 2.4i, and the Select package adds satellite radio, a moonroof, and more.

The S40 T5 and T5 AWD share engine, transmission, R-Design trim and equipment levels, with the exception of the all-wheel-drive powertrain on the T5 AWD. The new-for-2009 R-Design elements include a sport body kit with a rear spoiler, matte finish sideview mirrors, and a sport shift knob. Power front seats are standard, with leather upholstery optional. The T5 models offer standard automatic climate control and an upgraded high-performance audio system with MP3/WMA/CD functionality.

Option packages for the T5 models include the Premium package, which adds leather seating surfaces, a moonroof, and a HomeLink universal transmitter. The Dynamic Trim package, also exclusive to the T5 models, adds a front chin spoiler, rear lower-valance spoiler, trunk spoiler, sport suspension, sport steering wheel, and unique 17-inch alloy wheels.

Powertrain
Two engine choices are available for the 2009 Volvo S40. The standard engine on the S40 2.4i is a 2.4-liter 5-cylinder rated at 168 hp and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, or a 5-speed automatic transmission, with both transmissions driving the front wheels. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway. The T5 and T5 AWD share a turbocharged 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine rated at 227 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. The standard transmission is a 5-speed automatic. For 2009, neither turbocharged model is available with a manual gearbox. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway.

Safety
Standard safety features on all 2009 Volvo S40 models include dual-stage driver and front passenger frontal air bags, side seat-mounted air bags for front-row occupants, a Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) in the front seats, and an inflatable side curtain to protect both rows of outboard passengers. Daytime running lamps, Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DSTC), and anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard across the model lineup. A carryover safety feature is Volvo's automatic hazard warning system. In the event of an air bag deployment, the hazard lights are automatically activated to attract the attention of other motorists.

Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are 4 stars for the driver and 5 stars for the front passenger in a frontal impact. The S40 also received 5 stars in side-impact crash tests for both front and rear passengers, and 4 stars in the rollover test. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the S40 earned a "Good" rating in the frontal offset crash test, and an "Average" rating in the side-impact test.

Technology
Volvo's optional DVD-based navigation system receives an improved driver interface for 2009 that includes an extended point-of-interest menu, a bird's-eye view of the map, detailed intersection information, and building footprints. Volvo also offers Active Bending Lights (ABL), which provide up to twice the illumination of conventional halogen headlamps, according to Volvo, helping the driver to see further down the road. For turns, the lights swivel up to 15 degrees in the direction of the turn. To extend the life of the electronics, the ABL system is designed to disable itself automatically during the day.
