Overview
The first-generation S40, an entry-level compact luxury car from Volvo , was introduced in 1995. Based on a Mitsubishi Carisma platform (but sharing few parts with its counterpart), the small sedan emphasized safety, ergonomics and economy. The second-generation debuted in late 2004. It was built on an all-new platform developed by Volvo and inspired by the company's flagship S80. For 2008, the nimble front- or all-wheel-drive (AWD) S40 benefits from a minor facelift, and further refinements.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Volvo S40 models are: S40 2.4i, S40 T5, and S40 T5 AWD. The S40 2.4i is offered in front-wheel-drive trim only, with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. Manual adjustable seats are standard, with leather upholstery optional. Most accessories are powered, and air conditioning is standard (with manual control). Volvo's Performance Audio System with MP3/WMA/CD functionality is standard.

The S40 T5 and T5 AWD share engine, transmission, trim and equipment levels, with the exception of the all-wheel-drive powertrain-only found on the all-wheel-drive model. Power seats are standard, with leather upholstery optional. Nearly all accessories are electrically powered, and the T5 models offer standard electronic climate control (ECC). Volvo's upgraded high performance audio system with MP3/WMA/CD functionality is standard.

Major options for the 2.4i model include the Select package. It adds 17-inch wheels, satellite radio, power driver seat, a moonroof, and more. The T5 models may be equipped with the Premium package adding 17-inch wheels, leather seating surfaces, moonroof, Homelink transmitter, and more. The Dynamic Trim package, also exclusive to the T5 models, adds a front chin spoiler, rear lower-valance spoiler, trunk spoiler, sport suspension, sport steering wheel, and unique 17-inch alloy wheels.

Powertrain
Two engine choices are available for the 2008 Volvo S40. The standard engine on the S40 2.4i is a 2.4-liter 5-cylinder rated at 168 hp and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, or a 5-speed automatic transmission, with both transmissions driving the front wheels. EPA fuel economy estimates are 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway. The T5 and T5 AWD share a turbocharged 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine rated at 227 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. The standard transmission is a 5-speed automatic. For 2008, neither turbocharged model is available with a manual gearbox. EPA fuel economy estimates are 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway. All 2008 Volvo models are covered by a 4-year/50,000-mile comprehensive Volvo new car warranty.

Safety
Standard safety features on all 2008 Volvo S40 models include dual-stage driver and front passenger frontal air bags, safety belts with pre-tensioners, a Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) in the front seats, and an inflatable curtain to protect all rows of outboard passengers. Daytime running lamps, an anti-skid system with traction control (DSTC), and anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard across the model lineup.

New for 2008 is the automatic hazard warning. In the event of an air bag deployment, the hazard lights are automatically activated to attract other motorists. A tire-pressure-monitoring system (TPMS) is also standard on all models. The 2007 S40-structurally similar to the 2008 model-has been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); front-impact protection ratings were 4 stars driver/5 stars passenger. The S40 received 5 stars in side-impact crash tests for both front and rear passengers, and 4 stars in the rollover test.

Technology
Volvo's Active Bi-Xenon Light (ABL) provides up to twice the illumination of conventional halogen headlamps, according to Volvo, helping the driver to see further down the road. For turns, microprocessors control the lenses of the lights to turn up to 15 degrees in the direction of the turn. ABL is an all-speed system designed to be effective at highway speeds and at parking lot speeds, Volvo says. To extend the life of the electronics, the system is designed to disable itself automatically during the day.
