Volvo's C70 is all new this year, trading in its former soft drop top in favor of a three-piece retractable hard top. With a Scandinavian-influenced interior and sleek exterior, the C70 is packed full of safety features, including new rollover curtain protection. The curtain has an extra-stiff construction with double rows of slats that are slightly offset from each other, allowing them to remain upright and offer effective head protection even with the window open. The curtain also deflates slowly to provide protection should the car roll over.
First rolling onto the scene in 1998, the C70's curvaceous lines demonstrated that the automaker was no longer just for conservative suburbanites. This latest iteration of the C70 takes safety and style to a new level, and is available in one trim level for 2006, the T5. Under the hood resides a 2.5L, inline-five engine with a light-pressure turbocharger that generates 218 hp. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard with a 5-speed automatic (with Geartronic manual selection) optionally available. Safety features include dual-stage front-passenger air bags, dual side and side-curtain air bags, anti-submarine seats, daytime running lamps, ABS-assisted brakes, stability and traction control, a rollover protection system, and whiplash-protection seating.
Standard amenities include aluminum interior trim, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob with aluminum inlays, eight-way power driver and passenger seats with lumbar support (including driver's memory), and a trip computer. Options include a Premium Package (with leather seats, a HomeLink garage door opener, and a compass in the rearview mirror), Dyneaudio Package (a premium sound system with 6-disc, in-dash CD changer, a 910-watt amplifier, Dolby Pro-Logic II surround, 14 speakers with dual subwoofers, and a diversity antenna), and a Climate Package with heated front seats, headlamp washers, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Other options include 18-inch alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon gas discharge headlamps, rear park-assist, metallic paint, white Pearlescent paint, and a Tempa Spare.
The Compact Premium Sporty segment in which the Volvo C70 competes consists of 11 models and includes everything from luxury convertibles to canyon racers, with the C70 falling in the former category.
The segment was led by the best-selling Nissan 350Z (27,278 sales in 2005), followed by the Acura RSX (20,809), and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class (18,227), according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report.SM The Volvo C70 ranked 11th in sales, finding 1,442 buyers. Others in the segment include the Chrysler Crossfire, Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, BMW Z4, Porsche Boxster, Honda S2000, Saab 9-2X, and Audi TT.
