Overview
Introduced in 2003 for the 2004 model year, and designed in conjunction with the Porsche Cayenne, the Touareg was Volkswagen's first sport utility vehicle (SUV). The 5-seat Touareg delivered a blend of car-like handling and off-road prowess despite its low stance, according to the manufacturer. The 2007 model year saw the return of the diesel-powered Touareg, with a 10-cylinder twin-turbo engine that delivered better acceleration and fuel economy than its gasoline-powered counterparts. It's price-at the top of the Touareg model range-and the fact that it wasn't 50-state emissions compliant, led to its removal from the lineup. The Touareg received a significant update in 2008. The updates initiated a name change by Volkswagen to differentiate the model from the prior years (it was now the "Touareg 2"). For 2009, Volkswagen is re-introducing the diesel powerplant to the Touareg. As it meets stringent emissions standards, the new engine is 50-state compliant (in addition to the new diesel engine, Volkswagen sells the Touareg 2 with a gasoline V-6 and a gasoline V-8 powerplant). Changes weren't just limited to the powerplants, however. Volkswagen has also made minor modifications to the options packages for 2009.

Volkswagen offers a standard 3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all 2009 Touareg 2 models. In addition, all 2009 Volkswagen models come with a unique Carefree Maintenance Program-all scheduled maintenance described in the vehicle's maintenance booklet is free during the initial warranty period.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 is offered in three different models: Touareg 2 VR6, Touareg 2 V6 TDI and Touareg 2 V8 FSI. All models essentially share an identical 5-passenger body style and 4XMOTION permanent 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system with low-range gear. The major difference is found with the powerplants. All models include a long list of standard power accessories including power windows, power locks, cruise control and an anti-theft alarm. The standard audio package includes an AM/FM radio with a CD player and 10 speakers. An upgraded stereo features a 6-disc CD changer, 11 speakers, 300-watt amplified sound, and RDS capabilities. The standard seats are 12-way power-adjustable for the driver, and 8-way manual adjust for the passenger. Heated seats are standard. Upholstery on the standard models is V-Tex (synthetic leather), with Cricket leather optional. Volkswagen offers the Touareg 2 with several different option packages. These include the Safety package, Lux Plus/Technology package, Lux package, Lux Plus package, and the Technology package. The standard wheels on the Touareg are 17-inch aluminum alloy. Larger 18- and 19-inch wheel packages are available from the factory, and as a dealer accessory.

Powertrain
There are three powerplant choices for the 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2. The standard model features a 3.6-liter V-6 engine rated at 280 hp mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission (EPA fuel-economy estimates of 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway). Those wishing for more acceleration will seek the 4.2-liter V-8 engine rated at 350 hp. It is also connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission (EPA fuel-economy estimates of 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway). Volkswagen dropped the twin-turbo, diesel V-10 engine from the lineup in 2009 and replaced it with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged V-6 engine. It develops 221 hp and 407 lb.-ft. of torque. Utilizing common-rail injection and an advanced catalytic converter system, it meets the most stringent emission requirements of California. The engine is also 50-state compliant. A standard 6-speed automatic transmission sends power to the full-time 4WD system. Although 2009 EPA fuel-economy estimates have not been released, Volkswagen is quoting 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the Touareg 2 V-6 TDI. With a 26.4-gallon fuel tank, the Touareg 2 has an estimated highway range of more than 600 miles, according to the automaker.

Safety
The 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 models feature a long list of standard safety features. These include a driver and front passenger advanced multi-stage front air bag supplemental restraint system, and side curtain air bags designed to cover all outboard seating positions. In the event of a rollover, the side curtain air bags are deployed to reduce the risk of injury, Volkswagen says. Additionally, there are safety belt pre-tensioners for the driver, front passenger and rear outboard seating positions. Rear seats feature the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child safety-seat system on all models.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 received 5 stars (the agency's highest rating) in frontal crash testing for both driver and front passenger, as well as 5-star side-impact scores for both front- and rear-seat occupants. The rollover rating from the NHTSA was 4 stars. As of this writing, the Touareg 2 had not been crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
The 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V6 TDI is a ULEV-II compliant, 50-state-legal SUV. Volkswagen partly accomplishes this by sending the exhaust from the engine through an oxidizing catalyst and a particulate filter. From there, the spent gasses are injected with a special solution called "AdBlue." This clear, non-toxic and safe-to-handle liquid is an aqueous urea solution that is broken down by hot exhaust gasses into ammonia. The ammonia splits the nitric oxides into harmless nitrogen and water, VW says. According to Volkswagen, the 5-gallon reservoir of AdBlue stored in the 2009 Touareg 2 V6 TDI is designed to last about 10,000 miles before it needs to be refilled.
