Exterior Features
The 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact 5-seat crossover available in three trim levels. The Tiguan S features 16-inch wheels, and the Tiguan SE steps up to 17-inch or optional 18-inch wheels. The SEL trim features 19-inch wheels as standard, as well as bi-Xenon headlights and a sport-tuned suspension. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, with all-wheel drive (AWD) optional on the SE and SEL trims.

Interior Features
Standard features on the Volkswagen Tiguan S trim include cloth upholstery, air conditioning, keyless entry, some power accessories, Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8-speaker sound system. The SE's standard interior features include leatherette upholstery, roof rack, more power accessories, and an upgraded sound system. The SEL steps up to leather upholstery, 8-way power driver seat, automatic dual-zone climate control, and a premium sound system. The Tiguan offers between 16.6 and 23.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the seats, depending on how they're positioned. Maximum cargo space is 56.1 cubic feet, according to Volkswagen.

Optional Features
Volkswagen's stand-alone options on various trims of the Tiguan include a panoramic sunroof, trailer hitch, larger wheels, side steps, navigation system, and more.

Under the Hood
The Volkswagen Tiguan standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder rated at 200 horsepower. The engine is mated with a 6-speed manual transmission on the S trim, with a 6-speed automatic transmission optional on the S but standard on the other trims.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan are:
- Tiguan with FWD and automatic transmission: 22/27/24 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Tiguan with FWD and manual transmission: 18/26/21 mpg
- Tiguan with AWD: 21/27/23 mpg

Standard safety features on the Volkswagen Tiguan include anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, trailer-sway control, front-seat side air bags, and side curtain air bags. Other features are added to upper trims.
