Introduction
The 2014 Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car offered in sedan or station wagon body styles. The Jetta competes against numerous small hatchbacks, multi-purpose vehicles, and sedans.

Models and Features
Volkswagen offers the most popular versions of the 2014 Jetta Sedan in base S, mid-grade SE and upscale SEL trim. Fuel misers include the Jetta TDI, Jetta Hybrid SE, and the Jetta Hybrid SEL. The Jetta GLI is a sport-tuned model. The Jetta SportWagen is sold in S, SE, and TDI trim levels.

In addition to a more powerful turbocharged engine, the Jetta SE Sedan supplies larger wheels, leatherette seats, an iPod connection, satellite radio, electric steering, among other features. The Jetta SEL adds aluminum wheels, fog lights, Bluetooth connectivity and music streaming, Car-Net telematics, a touch-screen radio, navigation system, and a reversing camera. The SEL trim level also features a power sunroof, keyless passive entry with push-button starting, power driver's seat, and an automatic transmission.

Compared with the Jetta SE Sedan, the Jetta TDI Sedan is equipped with a turbo-diesel engine, aluminum wheels, Bluetooth, and Car-Net. The Jetta Hybrid SE adds a gas-electric hybrid powertrain, touch-screen radio, push-button starting, and LED taillights. Hybrid SEL models include larger wheels, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, navigation, reversing camera, and a power sunroof.

The Jetta GLI is equipped like the Jetta SE, adding a 210-horsepower turbocharged engine, sport suspension, 17-inch aluminum wheels with more aggressive tires, and subtle styling changes including a mesh grille, fog lights, and LED taillights. Sport-bolstered front seats, Bluetooth, Car-Net, and a touch-screen radio are also standard.

Switching to the 2014 Jetta SportWagen, SE trim adds an automatic transmission, aluminum wheels, leatherette seats, a touch-screen radio, satellite radio, and an iPod connection. To this, the TDI model includes a turbo-diesel engine, unique wheels, a reversing camera, and more.

Options and Packages
Options for the Jetta Sedan and SportWagen are grouped into packages or are available through the dealership. Additionally, any Jetta with a standard manual transmission can be equipped with an automatic or a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission, depending on the engine.

Optional equipment highlights include aluminum wheels, Bluetooth, Car-Net, leatherette seats, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, heated washer nozzles, automatic climate control, and keyless passive entry with push-button starting. A touch-screen radio, premium sound system, navigation system and a reversing camera are also available, as well as bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, and an adaptive front-lighting system. A power sunroof is offered, too, equipped with panoramic glass on the SportWagen model.

Under the Hood
No fewer than six different powertrains are offered for the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta lineup, all delivering power to the car's front wheels.

In its most affordable format, the Jetta S Sedan is equipped with a 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine matched with a standard 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Move up to the Jetta SE or SEL Sedans to obtain the new-for-2014 turbocharged, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, rated to make 170 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 184 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,500 rpm and 4,750 rpm. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard for the SE, while the SEL has a 6-speed automatic transmission. The automatic is optional for the Jetta SE.

This new turbocharged engine replaces, in the sedan models, the 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine that continues in the Jetta SportWagen S and SE. In the S, a 5-speed manual gearbox is standard. The SportWagen SE gets a standard 6-speed automatic, which is an option for the S.

The sporty Jetta GLI Sedan also has a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, one displacing 2.0 liters and generating 210 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 207 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) automated manual transmission optional.

Jetta TDI models are equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter diesel 4-cylinder engine, one generating 140 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 236 lb.-ft. of torque starting at 1,750 rpm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed DSG.

The Jetta Hybrid Sedans pair a turbocharged, 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric assist motor, Lithium-ion battery, and a 7-speed DSG to produce a combined 170 horsepower.

Fuel Economy
The Jetta S Sedan is expected to return a minimum of 23 mpg in the city and a maximum of 34 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission choice, according to the EPA. Only the significantly more powerful Jetta GLI is rated lower, at 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

The new turbocharged 1.8-liter engine in the Jetta SE and SEL Sedans gets 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. Choose the Jetta TDI Sedan for 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway. Jetta Hybrids are expected to return 42 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway.

In the Jetta SportWagen, the standard 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine is rated to return a minimum of 23 mpg in the city and a maximum of 33 mpg on the highway, depending on the transmission. The TDI versions are rated 29 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the 2014 Jetta Sedan or SportWagen for crash protection as this overview was written. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates the 2014 Jetta Sedan 4 stars (out of 5 stars) for frontal-impact protection, and assigns both body styles with a 4-star rollover resistance rating. Neither version had been assessed for side-impact protection as this overview was written.

In addition to an available reversing camera and, for the sedan models, an adaptive front-lighting system, the Jetta Sedan's new Car-Net technology provides Automatic Crash Notification service, which speeds rescuers to the car's location following an air bag deployment.
