What's New for 2015:

  • Completely redesigned
  • Bigger and roomier inside
  • Lighter and more fuel efficient
  • Multiple body styles and powertrains
  • Staggered model rollout through 2015

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf is a compact car offered as a 2-door or 4-door hatchback, and as a 4-door wagon. It is available with turbocharged gasoline, turbocharged diesel, and electric drivetrains, and in two performance-oriented variants, one of which offers all-wheel drive (AWD).

The new Golf competes with the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra GT, Kia Forte5, Kia Soul, Mazda 3, and Subaru Impreza. The e-Golf goes up against the BMW i3, Chevrolet Volt, Ford Focus Electric, Kia Soul EV, Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive, and Nissan Leaf.

Models and Features
The 2015 Golf lineup, once all models have reached dealer showrooms, will include the Golf 1.8T and Golf TDI Clean Diesel in hatchback and SportWagen body styles, as well as the e-Golf, Golf GTI, and the Golf R.

Volkswagen offers the Golf 1.8T in Launch Edition, S, SE, SEL, and Sport trim levels. The TDI Clean Diesel version is available in S, SE, and SEL trim levels. Details for the new Golf SportWagen, available in 1.8T and TDI Clean Diesel model series, will be finalized closer to its arrival in early 2015.

The redesigned Golf GTI is available in 2-door hatchback and 4-door hatchback body styles, and in S, SE, and Autobahn trim levels. The Golf R is the top performance model in the lineup, arriving in early 2015 as a 4-door hatchback. Similarly, the e-Golf model will also be available solely in 4-door hatchback format, and in a single level of specification.

Under the Hood
The Golf 1.8T is equipped with a turbocharged, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 170 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque; buyers choose between a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. A Cross Differential System (XDS) limited-slip differential is standard.

The Golf TDI Clean Diesel features a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder diesel engine generating 150 horsepower. Torque is the story here, with 236 lb.-ft. starting at a low 1,750 rpm. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, with Volkswagen's 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) automated manual transmission an option.

The Golf GTI derives performance from a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 210 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. With the optional Performance package horsepower jumps to 220. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed DSG optional. The DSG includes a launch-control feature.

The Golf R is powered by a 292-horsepower version of the Golf GTI's engine, and is equipped with a standard 4Motion AWD system. Torque measures 280 lb.-ft. and is available starting at 1,800 rpm. Buyers choose between a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DSG transmission, and the stability control system is equipped with a Sport mode and a full-deactivation mode for driving on a racetrack.

The e-Golf is an electric car equipped with a 24.2-kWh Lithium-ion battery and a 199-horsepower electric motor. Plug the e-Golf into a standard household outlet and charging takes 20 hours, according to Volkswagen. A 240-volt garage wallbox can charge the car in 4 hours, and when using a municipal DC fast charger the Golf's battery achieves an 80% charge in 30 minutes, VW says.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the Golf 1.8T returns a minimum of 25 mpg in the city and a maximum of 37 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission. The Golf TDI Clean Diesel is more efficient, rated to get a minimum of 30 mpg in the city and a maximum of 45 mpg on the highway.

The Golf GTI is rated to get a minimum of 25 mpg in the city and a maximum of 34 mpg on the highway. Official estimates for the Golf R will be available closer to the car's arrival, but Volkswagen says it will get up to 31 mpg on the highway.

Volkswagen also estimates "average real-world range" for the e-Golf to fall between 70 and 90 miles, though the car's maximum range is a claimed 115 miles. Every e-Golf includes a roadside-assistance program designed to alleviate range anxiety. In other words, if your e-Golf's battery is depleted, Volkswagen will rescue you.

Safety and Technology
Bluetooth and a touch-screen infotainment system are standard on all 2015 VW Golf models, and all Golfs except the Launch Edition include Bluetooth audio streaming and VW Car-Net services. Depending on the model and trim, the Golf can be optioned with a navigation system, premium sound system, keyless access with push-button engine starting, park-assist sensors, reversing camera, rain-sensing wipers, and an adaptive front-lighting system.

Every 2015 VW Golf is equipped with Automatic Post-Collision Braking, which is designed to stop the car immediately following a collision in order to limit or eliminate secondary crashes. VW Car-Net services include automatic crash notification and Manual Emergency Call features, as well as Family Guardian features including boundary alerts and speed alerts. A forward-collision warning system is optional for the 2015 Golf.

Built upon a new corporate platform shared by Audi and Volkswagen, the redesigned 2015 Golf earns a "Top Safety Pick" crash-test rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
