The Golf 2.5L is equipped with a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter, inline 5-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard on 2-door models, while 4-door models receive a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Golf TDI models have Volkswagen's clean diesel 2.0-liter, turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine, with 140 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, with a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) automated manual transmission optional.
The Golf R is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine creating 256 horsepower and 243 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox drives power to all four wheels through VW's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.Fuel Economy
As this overview was written, the EPA had officially rated the 2013 Golf TDI and Golf R for fuel economy as follows:
- Golf TDI with manual transmission: 30/42/34 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Gold TDI with DSG: 30/42/34 mpg
- Golf R: 19/27/22 mpg
Every 2013 VW Golf is equipped with 6 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and traction and stability control. Also included is an Intelligent Crash Response system that activates in the event of an air bag deployment, unlocking the doors, shutting off the fuel pump, and activating the hazard flashers. Optional on the TDI and standard on the Golf R are bi-xenon headlights with an Adaptive Front Lighting System.
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had rated the 2013 Golf's crashworthiness as this overview was written. However, the IIHS named the structurally identical 2012 Golf a "Top Safety Pick."
