Overview

What's New for 2015:

  • Regular cab body style discontinued
  • Off-road-ready TRD Pro Series variant debuts
  • Utility package debuts for base Access Cab version

Introduction
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is a midsize pickup truck offered in extended cab (Access Cab) and crew cab (Double Cab) body styles with a choice between rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD). It competes against the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Nissan Frontier.

Models and Features
Toyota offers the Tacoma in standard or Pre-Runner configuration, the latter raising the suspension for greater ground clearance and an off-road appearance. A 4WD system is optional for the standard versions, but not the Pre-Runner, and depending on the version selected, trim packages include SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro Series, and Limited.

The Tacoma SR includes body-color exterior trim, darkened headlights, turn signal indicators for the side mirrors, and black aluminum wheels. The SR5 features chrome grille and rear bumper trim, body-color front bumper and overfender trim, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, sliding rear window, fog lights, and front bucket seats with upgraded fabric.

Get the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Sport version and the Tacoma is equipped with a sport-tuned suspension, 17-in. aluminum wheels, fog lights, hood scoop, body-color bumpers and trim, a 115-volt/400-watt power outlet in the cargo bed, sport-bolstered bucket seats with water-resistant fabric, and more.

Alternatively, choose the TRD Off-Road version, which has an off-roading suspension, locking rear differential, 16-in. aluminum wheels with appropriate tires, skid plate protecting the engine, and a front tow hook. This version also gets chrome grille and rear bumper trim, a bed-mounted power outlet, sport seats with water-resistant fabric, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), hill-start assist, and downhill-assist control.

New for 2015, the Tacoma TRD Pro Series is equipped with off-road-ready components. The suspension boasts additional ride height and travel, and decreased-rate springs for a smoother ride over rough terrain, Toyota says. Black 16-in. beadlock-style aluminum wheels are wrapped in rugged all-terrain tires, and an exhaust system that reduces backpressure while increasing engine noise, according to the automaker. Design modifications include a blacked-out grille, unique paint color called Inferno, TRD shift knob, and more.

The Tacoma Limited builds on SR5 trim, adding lots of chrome to the exterior, including the door handles, mirror caps, grille surround, and exclusive 18-in. aluminum wheels. Inside, sport-bolstered seats are wrapped in leatherette upholstery and are heated in front. Toyota also installs in the Limited satellite radio, HD Radio with traffic and weather reports, navigation system, and Entune App Suite smartphone integration technology.

Under the Hood
Tacomas equipped with the 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine generate 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter peaking at 3,000 rpm. A 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed automatic transmission are available with this engine.

A 236-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine is available, making 266 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. With 2WD, a 5-speed automatic transmission is the only choice. A 6-speed manual gearbox is offered only in conjunction with 4WD.

All 2015 Tacomas include free scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles of ownership.

Fuel Economy
With the Tacoma's 4-cylinder engine, fuel-economy ratings range from 18 mpg in the city with 4WD to 25 mpg on the highway with 2WD and a manual gearbox. The Tacoma V-6 gets from a low of 16 mpg in the city with 4WD to 21 mpg on the highway with the automatic transmission.

Safety and Technology
Toyota offers its family of Entune touch-screen infotainment systems for the 2015 Tacoma, with available reversing camera, navigation, premium audio, and Entune App Suite technology upgrades depending on the trim level and equipment.

If you have a need for electricity at a work site, campground, or other location, the Tacoma can be optioned with a 115-volt/400-watt bed-mounted power port. Trucks with 4WD can be equipped with downhill-assist control, which automatically regulates speed when descending steep, off-road grades.
