What's New for 2014:
- New family of Entune infotainment systems
- SR package adds sporty appearance
- X-Runner sport truck is discontinued
The 2014 Toyota Tacoma enters its 10th year in production since its last complete redesign, yet it remains the best-selling model in the entry-level pickup truck segment. The Tacoma's only competition comes in the form of the equally aged Honda Ridgeline and Nissan Frontier.Models and Features
Toyota offers the 2014 Tacoma in regular cab, extended Access Cab, and 4-door Double Cab body styles paired with a regular-length cargo bed. The Double Cab is also available with a short cargo bed. Access Cab and Double Cab body styles are available as a PreRunner variant with a raised suspension and ride height.
Air conditioning and an Entune touch-screen audio system with a reversing camera, USB port, iPod connection, auxiliary audio input jack, and Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming capability are standard equipment on even the most basic Tacoma model. Upgrade to the Access Cab and the Tacoma includes power windows, power door locks, and front bucket seats separated by a center console. Double Cabs add power side mirrors and adjustable lumbar support for the driver's seat.
A Limited Edition Baja Series truck has bead-lock 16-inch aluminum wheels painted Gun-Metal Gray, LT265/70R16 off-road tires, a modified suspension with a 2-inch lift and additional wheel travel, and a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) cat-back exhaust system.Options and Packages
Add a Convenience package to a 2014 Tacoma and the truck gets power side mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, audio controls for the steering wheel, and a sliding rear window with privacy glass. The SR5 package includes these items plus fog lights, a chrome grille surround, chrome rear bumper, and color-keyed exterior trim. The SR5 package also equips the Tacoma with nicer interior materials, variable intermittent wipers, and an Entune Audio Plus system.
Two TRD option packages are also available. A TRD Sport package adds a sport suspension, 17-inch aluminum wheels with low-profile tires, and a hood scoop. A TRD Off-Road package adds hill-start assist control, downhill-assist control, an electronic-locking rear differential, revised suspension tuning, and off-road tires. Both packages also contain fog lights, sport seats wrapped in water-resistant fabric, and a 115-volt power outlet in the cargo bed.
A Limited package adds leatherette seats, heated front seats, metallic interior trim, additional chrome exterior trim, fog lights, and 18-inch chrome wheels. A V6 Tow package is also optional, prepping the truck for towing up to 6,500 lbs., depending on configuration.
Three Entune infotainment system upgrades are offered for the 2014 Tacoma. Entune Audio Plus adds a high-resolution screen, HD Radio, HD traffic and weather, iTunes tagging, and satellite radio. Entune Premium adds a navigation system and Entune App Suite technology. The Entune Premium JBL system includes premium Greenedge audio speakers.Under the Hood
Two different engines are offered for the 2014 Tacoma, depending on cab style and drivetrain choice. A 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine is rated to make 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque, with a choice between a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
A 4.0-liter V-6 engine is available, generating 236 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque, and equipped with a choice between a 6-speed manual and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Either engine can be paired with 4-wheel drive (4WD), and the V-6 tows up to 6,500 lbs. when properly equipped.
All 2014 Tacomas include free scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles of ownership.Fuel Economy
With the 4-cylinder engine and 2-wheel drive, the Tacoma's fuel economy ratings range from a minimum of 19 mpg in the city with the automatic transmission to a maximum of 25 mpg on the highway with the manual gearbox, according to the EPA. Add 4WD and the numbers are 18 mpg city/21 mpg highway, regardless of transmission choice.
There is less variation with the V-6 engine, which returns a minimum of 16 mpg in the city and a maximum of 21 mpg on the highway, almost without exception.Safety Ratings and Technology
All 2014 Tacomas have Toyota's Smart Stop Technology, which is designed to prevent the truck from accidentally accelerating as long as the driver is pushing down on the brake pedal. A reversing camera is also standard, thanks to the new family of Entune touch-screen audio systems.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Tacoma receives a 4-star (out of 5 stars) overall crash-test rating regardless of body style or drivetrain type. That includes a 4-star rollover resistance rating for all versions, including those with 4WD. Note, however, that the Tacoma Double Cab receives a 3-star frontal-impact rating due to a 3-star front passenger test result.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the 2014 Tacoma's crashworthiness as this overview was written.
