Overview

What's New for 2013:

  • Persona Series Special Edition debuts

Exterior Features
The 2013 Toyota Prius is a midsize, 5-passenger car offered only as a 5-door hatchback with a gas/electric hybrid powertrain. It is offered in four trim levels: Prius Two, Prius Three, Prius Four, and Prius Five. For 2013, a new Prius Three Persona Special Edition model is available, painted black, white, or Black Cherry.

Standard equipment includes auto-off headlights, LED running lights, LED taillights, heated folding power-adjustable side mirrors, and 15-inch aluminum wheels with aerodynamic wheel covers.

Interior Features
Inside, the 2013 Toyota Prius Two is equipped with a humidity-sensing automatic climate control system with dust and pollen filters, 6.1-inch touch-screen audio system with USB/iPod connectivity and an auxiliary audio input jack, Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, and a multi-information display with a trip computer and hybrid system monitoring. A tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, fabric seats with a driver seat height adjuster, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat are also standard, along with power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, Smart Key keyless access with push-button starting, and a covered storage compartment under the cargo floor.

Optional Features
There are no options offered on the 2013 Toyota Prius Two, so shoppers seeking extras need to examine the Toyota Prius Three. The Prius Three adds a navigation system with a free 3-year subscription to Entune multi-media services, satellite radio, HD Radio, iTunes tagging capability, reversing camera, and voice-control buttons on the steering wheel. The Prius Three also expands Smart Key operation to all four doors rather than just the driver's door.

For 2013, a new Persona Series Special Edition model is based on the Prius Three. It includes 17-inch aluminum wheels, Charcoal SoftTex leatherette seats with black accents and red stitching, SofTex-wrapped steering wheel, and dark chrome cabin accents. Additionally, the Prius Three can be equipped with a Solar Roof package that includes a power sunroof with a solar-powered ventilation system and remote-controlled air conditioning.

The Toyota Prius Four is equipped with automatic-off headlights, premium audio system, SofTex leatherette seats, 8-way power driver seat, heated front seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. It, too, can be equipped with a Solar Roof package and is further available with a premium hard-drive navigation system, head-up display, and Safety Connect telematics with Automatic Collision Notification service.

The Toyota Prius Five offers standard LED headlights, headlight washers, fog lights, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The only option for this trim level is the Advanced Technology package with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System, Lane Keep Assist, Safety Connect telematics, hard-drive navigation system, and a head-up display.

In addition to the primary option packages offered for the different Prius trims, Prius Plus Appearance and Prius Plus Performance packages are available and include features such as 17-inch forged aluminum wheels, ground effects kit, lowering springs, rear sway bar, and unique floor mats and badges. Dealers can also install a number of extra-cost accessories on a Prius.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Toyota Prius is a full hybrid model able to travel at speeds up to 25 mph on electricity alone, according to Toyota. It is equipped with a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, electric assist motor, and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack driving the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The powertrain's combined horsepower rating is 134.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Toyota Prius are 51/48/50 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Safety
Every 2013 Toyota Prius is equipped with 7 air bags, traction and stability control system, hill-start assist, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and Smart Stop technology designed to make it impossible for the Prius to accelerate when the brake pedal is simultaneously pressed.

Safety-related options for the Prius Four and Prius Five include Safety Connect telematics with Automatic Collision Notification service, which activates when the air bags deploy and can automatically contact authorities and speed rescue personnel to the scene of an accident. Additionally, the Prius Five model can be fitted with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System, and Lane Keep Assist technologies.

In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2013 Prius received a 5-star (out of 5) overall rating. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2013 Prius. However, the structurally similar 2012 model was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute.
