Overview

What's New for 2015:

  • Persona Series returns

Introduction
The 2015 Toyota Prius is a 5-door hatchback that is classified as a midsize car by EPA standards. It comes standard with a gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain, and the Prius Plug-in version offers purely electric propulsion for up to 11 miles of distance at speeds up to 62 mph. (Note: the 2015 Toyota Prius C hatchback and Prius V wagon models are reviewed separately.)

Models and Features
The standard version of the 2015 Prius is offered in numerical trim levels called Two, Three, Four, and Five. This year, a Persona Series version of the Prius Three is also for sale.

By upgrading to the Prius Three buyers receive Smart Key operation for all doors rather than just for the driver's door, a navigation system, and Entune App Suite smartphone pairing with Bing search, Internet radio access, and selected data services. The new Persona Series is offered in exclusive Absolutely Red or Blizzard Pearl paint colors combined with smoked-finish 17-in. aluminum wheels, black leatherette seats with dark gray stitching, dark chrome interior accents, blue footwell lighting, and turn signal indicators on the side mirrors.

The Prius Four adds leatherette upholstery and an 8-way power driver's seat, premium sound system, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a universal programmable remote control. The Prius Five is further equipped with 17-in. alumimum wheels, LED headlights, and fog lights.

Toyota bases the Prius Plug-in on the Prius Three trim level, adding extra chrome trim, 10-spoke aluminum wheels, heated cloth seats, Remote Climate Control, and 3 years of roadside assistance. The Remote Climate Control system allows the owner to operate the air conditioning or heater from a smartphone application, preparing the cabin for driving while the Prius is still plugged in to an electrical outlet. Seaglass Pearl and Clearwater Blue paint colors are unique to this model.

The Prius Plug-in Advanced includes a hard-drive navigation system, Entune App Suite with services specific to this trim level, premium audio system, and a head-up display. The Advanced trim level is also equipped with leatherette seats, an 8-way power driver's seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal programmable remote control, and one year of Safety Connect service, which includes an SOS Emergency Assistance button and automatic collision notification, among other features.

Under the Hood
In the standard Prius, a 1.8-liter, Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine is paired with an electric motor, nickel-metal hydride battery pack, and a regenerative braking system to create a gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain featuring Normal, Power, Eco, and EV driving modes. In EV mode, the Prius can travel at low speeds solely on electricity, but only for about a mile, Toyota says. Combined, these components generate 134 horsepower, which gets the Prius to 60 mph in less than 10 seconds, according to Toyota.

The Prius Plug-in model features a 4.4-kWh Lithium-ion battery pack that takes up no additional space compared to a standard Prius, but does increase curb weight by 154 lbs. The idea here is that the more powerful battery provides up to 11 miles of purely electric driving range, at speeds up to 62 mph, according to Toyota.

Toyota estimates that the Prius' battery can be recharged in 3 hours or less using a standard household outlet. Using a 240-volt quick charger reduces charging time to 1.5 hours. The Prius Plug-in can operate solely on electricity, solely on the gasoline engine to conserve power, or using a combination of both the battery and the gasoline engine.

Regardless of which model buyers choose, the 2015 Prius includes 2 years or 25,000 miles of free scheduled service.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the standard 2015 Prius returns 51 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. Choose the Prius Plug-in for a combined driving range of 95 MPGe. When driven as a gas-electric hybrid the Prius Plug-in model's combined rating of 50 mpg matches that of the standard Prius.

Safety and Technology
A Solar Roof package is offered for the Prius Three, equipping the car with a sunroof containing embedded solar panels that power a ventilation system designed to keep the car cooler when parked in the sun. The panels also supply enough juice to power a Remote Climate Control system that the owner can use to cool or warm the cabin prior to driving.

A Deluxe Solar Roof package is optional for the Prius Four, adding this technology plus a hard-drive navigation system, premium sound system, head-up display, and Safety Connect services. The Prius Five is offered with an exclusive Advanced Technology package. It contains dynamic radar cruise control with a pre-collision system, lane-keep assist system, and Safety Connect services.

The Prius Plug-in model's optional Technology package equips the car with dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system, LED headlights, and fog lights.
