What's New for 2014:
- Sun Fusion exterior paint color for Prius C
- Daytime running lights standard for Prius V
- Panoramic sunroof option for Prius V Three
- Price reductions for Prius Plug-in models
The 2014 Toyota Prius lineup is comprised of four different models. The standard Prius is a midsize 5-door hatchback, the Prius C is a subcompact 5-door hatchback, and the Prius V is a midsize multi-purpose vehicle. The Prius Plug-in model is a version of the standard Prius, one that can travel up to 11 miles on electricity as long as you keep speeds below 62 mph, Toyota says.Models and Features
Toyota offers the Prius, Prius C, and the Prius V in trim levels designated by a number: Two, Three, Four (Prius and Prius C only), and Five. The Prius Plug-in is sold in standard and Advanced trim levels.
Standard equipment depends on the model and the trim level selected. Highlights from the Prius C One model's standard equipment list include power exterior mirrors, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, trip computer with hybrid system displays, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, fabric seats, and free scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles of ownership.Options and Packages
Highlights from the Prius C model's optional equipment list include aluminum wheels, a power sunroof, upgraded sound system, navigation system, Entune App Suite technology, Touch Tracer Display technology, and SofTex leatherette upholstery.
The Prius and Prius V models can be fitted with LED headlights, a reversing camera, premium audio system, power driver's seat, heated front seats, Smart Key passive entry system, Safety Connect services, and dynamic radar cruise control with a pre-collision system. A lane-keep assist system, head-up display, and a solar-powered ventilation system are unique to the Prius, while the Prius V is offered with a panoramic sunroof and an Advanced Guidance Parking System.Under the Hood
The Toyota Prius C is the smallest member of the Prius family, equipped with a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, electric assist motor, nickel-metal hydride battery, and a regenerative braking system that delivers a combined 99 horsepower. The Prius and Prius V models are equipped with a larger, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, more powerful electric assist motor, and a bigger battery pack. The result is a combined 134 horsepower.
A plug-in version of the Prius model's powertrain swaps the nickel-metal hydride battery for a larger and more capable Lithium-ion battery that the owner recharges by plugging the car in to a household electrical outlet, home charging station, or a municipal charging station. It takes up to 3 hours to recharge the battery using a home outlet, while more powerful charging stations can replenish the battery in a shorter period of time.Fuel Economy
In combined driving, the Prius and the Prius C are estimated to get 50 mpg, with the Prius doing better on the highway and the Prius C doing better in the city. The Prius V, a larger vehicle, is not quite as fuel-efficient, earning a combined fuel-economy estimate of 44 mpg.
The Prius Plug-in is rated to return 95 MPGe when the driver starts off with a full battery and then burns all of the gas in the tank once the battery reaches its minimal state of charge and the car switches out of electric vehicle (EV) driving mode. Operated solely on the gas-electric hybrid powertrain, the Prius Plug-in is rated to get 50 mpg in combined driving.Safety Ratings and Technology
Because the 2014 Toyota Prius family is comprised of three different body styles, crash-test ratings are different depending on the version of the car.
Starting with the popular standard Prius model, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it a 4-star (out of 5 stars) overall safety rating, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) calls it a "Top Safety Pick." When equipped with the available dynamic radar cruise control system and pre-collision system, this model is a "Top Safety Pick+," according to the IIHS.
The smaller Prius C model gets a 4-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA, but that's accompanied by a warning about door panel intrusion and resulting potential injury to a rear-seat occupant in a side-impact crash. In IIHS testing, the Prius C earns the top rating of "Good" in all assessments except for the small overlap frontal-impact evaluation, for which the car is rated "Poor."
The larger Prius V model gets a 5-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA, but earns the same ratings as the Prius C from the IIHS.
All versions of the 2014 Prius are equipped with Toyota's Smart Stop Technology, which is designed to prevent accidental acceleration by making it impossible for the car to accelerate as long as the driver is pressing the brake pedal. A Vehicle Proximity Notification System is also standard, producing a noise when the Prius is operating in EV mode at low speeds in order to let pedestrians and cyclists know that the car is approaching.
The standard Prius and the Prius V models offer Safety Connect telematics service including Automatic Collision Notification, but this feature is available only on the more expensive trim levels. As part of the available dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC) upgrade, a pre-collision system can identify when the car is going to collide with an object ahead and can apply the brakes in order to reduce impact speed while at the same time cinching the seat belts tight to best protect occupants.
A lane-keep assist system is offered only for the standard Prius, featuring a lane-departure warning system that beeps if the car drifts out of the intended lane of travel. When the DRCC is active, this system can also help to "steer" the Prius back toward the center of its lane. Use the turn signal to indicate a lane change and these lane-departure warning and lane-keeping systems are not activated.
