Exterior FeaturesThe 2013 Toyota Matrix is a compact 5-door hatchback available in L and S trim levels. Heated power side mirrors, rear window wiper, and 16-inch steel wheels with plastic wheel covers are standard on the Matrix L. The Matrix S adds fog lights and variable intermittent windshield wipers, while the Matrix S AWD includes a chrome-tipped exhaust outlet.
Interior FeaturesAir conditioning, height-adjustable driver's seat, fold-flat front passenger's seat, and a stereo with satellite radio, USB port, iPod connectivity and control, and an auxiliary audio input jack are standard on the Matrix L. The base model also includes power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, Optitron gauges, and more.
The Matrix S adds a new Display Audio system with a 6.1-inch touch screen and Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, sport-themed seat fabric, and metallic interior trim.
Optional FeaturesThe Matrix L can be equipped with fog lights, sportier body trim, and an "S" badge. The S models are available with the same body trim and "S" badge as the L model, plus 17-inch aluminum wheels and a power sunroof.
Under the HoodThe Toyota Matrix L is equipped with a 132-horsepower, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 4-speed automatic available as an option.
Matrix S models have a larger 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 158 horsepower. This engine can be paired with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is also available on the Matrix S, combined with a 4-speed automatic.
Fuel EconomyEPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Toyota Matrix are:
- Matrix L with manual transmission: 23/32/29 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Matrix L with automatic transmission: 25/32/28 mpg
- Matrix S with manual transmission: 21/28/24 mpg
- Matrix S with 5-speed automatic transmission: 21/29/24 mpg
- Matrix S AWD with 4-speed automatic transmission: 20/26/22 mpg
SafetyThe 2013 Toyota Matrix is equipped with 6 air bags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, traction and stability control, and Smart Stop technology designed to prevent acceleration when the brake pedal is depressed.
As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not performed crash tests on the Toyota Matrix. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2013 Toyota Matrix a "Good" rating for frontal-impact protection, "Good" rating for side-impact protection, and an "Acceptable" rating for rear-impact injury prevention.
