Overview

The Toyota Matrix is a popularly priced 5-seat hatchback that features generous cargo space, according to its maker. The 2011 model is little changed, but the sporty XRS trim has been eliminated.

The base 2011 Toyota Matrix features 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, some power accessories, cruise control, and a 4-speaker sound system. The Matrix S trim features a more powerful engine, upgrades the sound system, and adds fog lights and a fold-flat front passenger seat. The Sport option package (available on both trims), adds two spoilers, 17-inch wheels to the S trim, and fog lights to the base trim. The S trim is eligible for the Premium option package, which includes a sunroof, Bluetooth connectivity, and more. Cargo space behind the rear seats comes to 19.8 cubic feet; total cargo space with rear seats folded is 61.5 cubic feet, according to Toyota.

The 2011 Toyota Matrix's base power plant is a 132-horsepower, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway with the standard 5-speed manual transmission, or 25/31 with the optional 4-speed automatic, according to the EPA. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard. The Matrix S Premium features a 158-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and (with FWD) a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission. With the optional all-wheel drive (AWD), the Matrix S trim employs a 4-speed automatic transmission. The S delivers 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway with FWD and automatic transmission, and 20/26 with AWD.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Toyota Matrix include anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, active front head restraints, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. In government crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Matrix a rollover rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Matrix highest-possible "Good" ratings in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests.
