Overview

What's New for 2015:

  • Following a complete redesign in 2014, no changes are made to the 2015 Highlander

Introduction
The 2015 Toyota Highlander is a midsize crossover SUV with 3 rows of seats, room for up to 8 passengers, and a choice between a gasoline engine or a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. It competes against the Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, and Nissan Pathfinder.

Models and Features
Toyota sells the 2015 Highlander in LE, LE Plus, XLE, and Limited trim levels. The hybrid version is offered only in the Limited trim level.

Select the LE Plus and the Highlander adds a V-6 engine, upgraded aluminum wheels, fog lights, and a power tailgate with a flip-up rear window. Triple-zone automatic climate control is also standard for this version, along with satellite radio, HD Radio with traffic and weather reports, an 8-way power driver's seat, and upgraded trim and upholstery.

The Highlander XLE adds leather seats, heated front seats, power sunroof, navigation system, and smartphone integration with Entune App Suite technology. The XLE also features a larger multi-information display, Smart Key passive entry system with push-button engine starting, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, Driver Easy Speak technology, second-row window sunshades, and more.

The Limited trim level is equipped with LED running lights, a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert technology, premium sound system, heated and ventilated front seats, second-row captain's chairs, woodgrain interior trim, ambient cabin lighting, rear park-assist sensors, and 19-in. aluminum wheels.

Under the Hood
Toyota supplies a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine in the Highlander LE, one making 185 horsepower. It is offered only in this trim level, only with front-wheel drive (FWD), and only with a 6-speed automatic transmission. All other non-hybrid Highlanders come with a 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability, and either FWD or Dynamic Torque Control all-wheel drive (AWD).

The Highlander Hybrid is also equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, one paired with dual electric-assist motors that effectively give this version of the SUV AWD. According to Toyota, the nickel-metal hydride battery pack supplies electric-only operation for short distances and at speeds up to 25 mph, and regenerative brakes capture otherwise lost kinetic energy in order to recharge the battery pack. The hybrid's horsepower rating is 280, making it the most powerful Highlander variant. It is also the most fuel-efficient variant.

For all 2015 Highlanders, Toyota includes free scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles of ownership.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2015 Highlander LE with the standard 4-cylinder engine is rated to get 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. That's just a bit more than a Highlander with a V-6 engine and FWD, which comes in at 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway. Add AWD and those numbers each drop by a digit.

If maximizing fuel economy is your goal, choose the Highlander Hybrid. It is EPA-rated to return 27 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Safety and Technology
Toyota offers what it calls Safety Connect technology for the 2015 Highlander, but only on the Limited trim level, and only as part of an option package. The subscription-based service includes automatic-collision notification, emergency assistance, and roadside assistance. Toyota also reserves its rear park-assist sensors and its blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert system for the top-of-the-line Limited version, on which they come standard. As an option, buyers of the Limited can upgrade to an adaptive cruise control system with a Pre-Collision System.

On the technology front, every 2015 Highlander is equipped with a touch-screen infotainment system including Bluetooth connectivity and music streaming, USB 2.0 port, advanced voice-recognition technology, and a reversing camera. Move up the trim level ladder and this system gains features including satellite radio, HD Radio, traffic and weather data, premium speakers, navigation system, and Entune App Suite technology. Toyota also offers a rear-seat Blu-Ray DVD entertainment system for the Highlander.

Toyota's Driver Easy Speak system is also available for the 2015 Highlander, a voice-amplification technology that makes it easier for the driver to be heard by rear passengers, as well as the company's Smart Key passive entry system with push-button engine starting.
