The 2013 Toyota Highlander is a 7-passenger, midsize crossover SUV offered in base, Plus, SE, and Limited trim levels. Standard equipment includes power exterior mirrors, automatic headlights, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, rear spoiler, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Select the Highlander Hybrid, and the SUV includes blue-tinted headlights, fog lights, and hybrid badges.Interior Features
The 2013 Highlander is equipped with standard front and rear air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and a touch-screen radio with a USB port and Bluetooth calling and music streaming. The driver seat offers 8-way manual adjustment, the sliding second-row seat features a 40/20/40-split folding design, and a 50/50-split folding third-row bench seat is standard.
Choose the base version of the Highlander Hybrid and the SUV is equipped with a premium touch-screen audio and navigation system with Entune mobile application services, reversing camera, and a keyless access and push-button ignition system.Optional Features
A Cold Weather package is optional for the base version of the Highlander, providing a windshield wiper defroster and heated outside mirrors. Add the optional V-6 engine, and the Highlander can be equipped with 5,000 pounds of towing capacity.
The new Highlander Plus trim level includes a 3.5-inch multi-information display with a trip computer, reversing camera, seats with easy-clean fabric, power lumbar adjustment for the driver seat, roof rails, flip-up rear window glass, cargo cover, metallic interior accents, fog lights, sunvisor extensions, and rear reading lights. A Cold Weather package is optional on this version.
The Highlander SE trim adds a power liftgate, front wiper de-icer, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, leather front and second-row seats, leatherette third-row seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, universal garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror with a compass, and a power moonroof. Options for this version include a V-6 engine and a Towing package, and models with the V-6 engine can also be equipped with a navigation system and a premium sound system.
The Highlander Limited is equipped with a standard V-6 engine, triple-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power driver seat, 4-way power front passenger seat, and 19-inch aluminum wheels. Perforated leather upholstery, wood-grain interior trim, chrome roof rails and Limited badges are also standard on the Limited trim, along with a full-size spare tire and puddle lamps for the exterior mirrors. Options include a premium touch-screen audio system with navigation and Entune mobile application services, rear-seat entertainment system, and a Towing package.
For the Highlander Hybrid model, options for the base version include 19-inch aluminum wheels, power liftgate, and a rear-seat entertainment system. A Cold Weather package provides a windshield wiper de-icer and heated exterior mirrors, while the Leather Premium package adds a power sunroof, leather seats, heated front seats, universal garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and leather and metallic interior trim.
Upgrade to the Highlander Hybrid Limited trim level and the SUV is equipped with chrome roof rails, triple-zone climate control, 10-way power driver seat, 4-way power front passenger seat, woodgrain inlay on the leather-trimmed shift knob, and woodgrain interior trim. Options for the Limited trim include the premium touch-screen audio and navigation system, and rear-seat DVD entertainment.Under the Hood
Base and SE trims come standard with a 187-horsepower, 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission and have front-wheel drive (FWD).
All-wheel drive (AWD) is only available with the 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that's optional on the Base and SE trim levels and standard on the Limited trim. A 5-speed automatic transmission is paired with the V-6 engine.
The Highlander Hybrid is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and three electric motors, which effectively creates an AWD system. A nickel-metal hydride battery pack feeds the electric motors, and is recharged via regenerative brakes. Combined, this gas-electric powertrain generates 280 horsepower. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard.Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Toyota Highlander are:
- Highlander 4-cylinder FWD: 20/25/22 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Highlander V-6 FWD: 18/24/20 mpg
- Highlander V-6 AWD: 17/22/19 mpg
- Highlander Hybrid: 28/28/28 mpg
The 2013 Toyota Highlander is equipped with anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, hill-start assist, and 7 air bags including a driver knee air bag. Smart Stop technology is also standard, and is designed to make it impossible for the Highlander to accelerate with the brake pedal depressed. Models with AWD include downhill assist control, and a rearview camera comes standard on all except the base trim.
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2013 Highlander receives a 4-star (out of 5) overall safety rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2013 Highlander as this overview is written, but the structurally identical 2012 model was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute.
