Overview

What's New for 2013:

  • Standard power exterior mirror with illuminated markers
  • Cement Gray paint color for Trail Teams Special Edition
  • Magma Red paint color for other FJ Cruiser models

Exterior Features
The 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser is a midsize 5-passenger SUV built for serious off-roading. The FJ Cruiser offers body-on-frame construction, rear- or 4-wheel-drive (2WD or 4WD), and a single level of trim.

Toyota says the FJ Cruiser features "heritage-inspired" design cues that recall the old FJ40 model, such as round headlights, hood and fender contours, white painted roof, and a rear-mounted spare tire with an offset license plate location. Three individual wipers clear the windshield, clamshell-style side doors provide easier access to the rear seat, and the tailgate glass opens separately from the side-hinged rear cargo door.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch black steel wheels with 265/70 mud-and-snow tires, power exterior mirrors with illuminated marker lights, and, with 4WD, full underbody skid plates. The FJ's approach angle, with 4WD, is 34 degrees. The departure angle is 31 degrees.

Interior Features
The FJ Cruiser can hold 27.9 cubic feet of cargo behind its rear seat. Fold the rear seat flat, and the FJ offers 66.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Standard equipment for the FJ Cruiser includes water-repellant cloth upholstery, easy-clean all-weather flooring, 8-way manually adjustable driver seat, and air conditioning. Power windows, power door locks, and a tilt steering wheel are also standard, along with a 6-speaker stereo with CD/MP3 player, satellite radio, USB port, iPod connectivity, and Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming.

Optional Features
In addition to a set of aluminum wheels, running boards, and a locking rear differential for 4WD models with an automatic transmission, there are no other stand-alone options. However, there are four main option packages offered for the 2013 FJ Cruiser.

The Off-Road package provides off-road shocks, locking rear differential, active traction control system, and a "floating ball" information display with a compass and an exterior temperature indicator. The Toyota Racing Development (TRD) package employs more aggressively tuned shocks, 16-inch aluminum wheels shod with all-terrain tires, and TRD decals.

The Convenience package adds cruise control, remote keyless entry, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, auto-dimming rearview mirror, reversing camera, rear window wiper, spare tire cover, and aluminum exterior mirror housings.

The Upgrade package contains 17-inch aluminum wheels, locking rear differential and active traction control (on 4WD models equipped with an automatic transmission), premium sound system, rear park-assist sensors, "floating ball" information display with a compass and outside temperature indicator, and upgraded interior trim.

A Trail Teams Special Edition package adds heavy-duty suspension components, skid plates, rock rails, locking rear differential, active traction control system, and unique TRD aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires to help make it as off-road-ready as an FJ Cruiser can be from the factory. It is offered exclusively in Cement Gray paint with black exterior trim, and comes with a premium sound system.

Under the Hood
The 2013 FJ Cruiser is equipped with a 260-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine generating 271 lb.-ft. of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and these models have a standard 5-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 4,700 pounds.

Buyers can opt for a part-time or full-time 4WD system. The part-time system is available only with the automatic transmission, and a locking rear differential is optional. The full-time system offers an optional 6-speed manual gearbox with a standard locking rear differential and limited-slip center differential. Toyota says the FJ Cruiser with the manual gearbox can traverse the Rubicon Trail.

Every 2013 FJ Cruiser is equipped with free scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser are:

  • FJ Cruiser 2WD with automatic transmission: 16/20/18 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • FJ Cruiser 4WD with manual transmission: 15/18/16 mpg
  • FJ Cruiser 4WD with automatic transmission: 17/20/18 mpg

Safety
The 2013 FJ Cruiser is equipped with 6 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and a traction and stability control system. It also comes standard with Smart Stop Technology, a brake override system that is designed to make it impossible for the SUV to accelerate with the brake pedal depressed.

As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not performed crash tests on the 2013 FJ Cruiser. Rather, the only rating given to the SUV is for rollover resistance, and in this regard the Toyota receives 3 stars (out of 5). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not carried forward its ratings for the FJ Cruiser as this overview is written. In 2012, the FJ Cruiser received "Good" ratings for frontal-, side-, and rear-impact injury protection. The FJ Cruiser's roof crush strength rating was "Marginal."
