Overview
What Changed for 2008:
- XLE model gets darker wood trim
- Classic Silver Metallic paint added
- Titanium Metallic paint choice dropped
- Revised EPA fuel-economy figures
OverviewToyota's midsize sedan was completely redesigned for 2007, so changes to the 2008 model are few. The 6th-generation Camry retains its familiar size and shape, but the sharp creases and other styling details of the new model signify a break-albeit a small one-from tradition. Camry production recently expanded from its old Kentucky home to a second plant in Indiana.
In addition to four trim levels of the gasoline-powered car, a Camry Hybrid sedan is now available. Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, similar to the system used in the
Prius and
Highlander, has been adapted for use in the Camry sedan. It is mated to a special version of the Camry's 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, and the battery, inverter, and other components have been modified for minimal impact on passenger and cargo space. EPA mileage estimates are 33 mpg city/34 mpg highway.
Model LineupThe front-wheel-drive 2008 Toyota Camry sedan is available in five trim levels, including the gas-electric Hybrid. The model lineup includes the value-priced CE; volume-selling LE; high-end XLE; and sporty SE. The Camry CE includes Toyota's Optitron illuminated gauges; 6-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo; power windows and door locks; cruise control; and air conditioning with a pollen filter. The Camry LE adds an 8-way power driver's seat; dual chrome exhaust tips on models with the V-6 engine; and remote keyless entry. The Camry SE gets 17-inch alloy wheels; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; blue-light gauges; black sport grille; and a sport suspension. The Camry XLE includes a 440-watt JBL stereo; dual-zone automatic climate control; wood interior trim; a power moonroof; and a 40/20/40 split rear seat that reclines 8 degrees. The Camry Hybrid gets 16-inch wheels and tires; Smart Entry system with a push-button starter; power locks and windows; 6-speaker stereo; tilt and telescoping steering; and cruise control.
PowertrainThe standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine on the 2008 Toyota Camry sedan produces 158 hp and 161 lb.-ft. of torque. It can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine has an output of 268 hp and 248 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard with the V-6. The V-6 is available on LE, SE and XLE models.
The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine in the Camry Hybrid makes 147 hp and 138 lb.-ft. of torque. Combined with the electric motor, total horsepower is measured at 187. Like many hybrids, the Camry features a continuously variable transmission that shifts without the traditional gears.
SafetyAccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (
NHTSA), the 2008 Toyota Camry sedan gets a 5-star rating in both frontal and side-impact crashes. Found on all Camry models are dual front air bags; seat-mounted side air bags; side curtain air bags; and a driver's knee air bag. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist are standard, too. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control is an option. The Camry's front seats use a Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) design, Toyota says.
TechnologyStandard on the 2008 Camry Hybrid is Toyota's Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system that combines stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes and other technologies. Both braking and steering are controlled electronically through VDIM. The result is a system that anticipates and corrects a slipping tire before a slide or skid occurs, Toyota says.
