Overview

What Changed for 2008:

  • No changes from 2007 model

  • Significant upgrades carry over from last year
Overview
Although the Camry sedan was redesigned for 2007, the Camry Solara coupe/convertible goes into its ninth model year in 2008 with no changes. Last year's updates included revised front and rear styling (with Xenon headlamps on some models and LED taillights on all); a revised dashboard with electroluminescent gauges; and new seat-mounted side air bags for both the coupe and convertible and side curtain air bags for coupes only. The original Camry Solara bowed in 1999, a follow-up to the Camry coupe of 1994-1996. While the Camry coupe was simply a 2-door version of the sedan, the Camry Solara featured sportier styling. The Camry Solara Convertible followed in 2000. The current version of the Camry Solara was introduced in 2004.

Based on the midsize Camry sedan, the Solara offers coupe styling with a useable trunk and back seat-an especially rare find in the convertible field. Warranty coverage for the Camry Solara is 3 years/36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper, with 5-year/60,000-mile coverage for the powertrain.

Model Lineup
The front-wheel-drive 2008 Toyota Camry Solara coupe is available in three trim levels: SE, Sport and SLE. Standard features on the SE include power windows, locks, and mirrors; air conditioning; cruise control; and a 6-speaker AM/FM stereo with a 6-disc CD changer. The Sport gets body enhancements, including a rear spoiler and exhaust tip; aluminum sport pedals; and a choice of 17-inch performance or all-weather tires. The 4-cylinder SLE coupe adds automatic climate control, wood-grain interior trim, and a JBL stereo system. The V-6 SLE coupe gets perforated leather seats.

The Solara convertible also comes in SE, Sport and SLE variants with similar upgrades to the coupe and a power-operated top. The Sport model gets a dark-charcoal interior with graphite trim.

Powertrain
A 155-hp, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, with 5-speed manual or optional 5-speed automatic transmission, is standard on the coupe. A 210-hp, 3.3-liter V-6 engine with 5-speed automatic is optional on the coupe and standard on the convertible. Both feature variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for improved smoothness and fuel economy, Toyota says.

Safety
According to tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2008 Toyota Camry Solara convertible gets a "Good" rating for frontal offset crashes and an "Acceptable" rating for side-impact crashes. Standard safety features include dual front air bags; seat-mounted side air bags; side curtain air bags (coupe only); and anti-lock brakes. Electronic stability control is optional only on the top-of-the-line SLE V-6 model.

Technology
Toyota says its engineers added reinforcements to give the 2008 Solara convertible a quieter ride and better handling. The power top opens and closes in about 10 seconds. It has both a headliner and a glass rear window. The convertible, with roof raised, gives two more inches of rear headroom than the coupe. An optional windscreen makes for a quieter ride when the top is lowered.
