Overview

What's New
The two-door Camry Solara coupe and convertible receive minor changes: four-cylinder coupes now offer an optional 5-speed automatic transmission (replacing last year's four-speed), and a power-adjustable lumbar support for the driver's seat is now standard in SE and SE Sport models.

Overview
Back in the '60s and '70s, mid-size personal luxury coupes were all the rage; cars like the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Oldsmobile Toronado, Buick Riviera, and Ford Thunderbird were stylish and popular. They were more mature versions of small sporty coupes like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, offering more interior room and an emphasis on luxury over performance. Today, we refer to these vehicles as mid-size sporty cars. Like its predecessors, the Camry Solara is based on a mid-size sedan; as such it benefits from a much more generous rear seat and more trunk room than many of its competitors, particularly in convertible form.

The Camry sedan is available in LE, XLE, and sporty SE trim, while the Camry Solara offers SE and SLE models, with an additional SE Sport model for the coupe. Base engine for all Camry models is a 2.4L four-cylinder that produces 154 hp in the sedan and 157 hp in the coupe, backed by either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. States that comply with California emissions regulations also get a PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) version of the four-cylinder sedan with a 145-hp engine, a sealed fuel system to prevent evaporative emissions, and a 15-year/150,000-mile warranty on the emissions system.

LE and XLE sedans offer an optional 190-hp, 3.0L V-6 engine; SE sedans offer a 210-hp, 3.3L V-6. A 225-hp version of the 3.3L V-6 is optional on Camry Solara coupes and standard on the convertible. All convertibles feature a power-operated top that can raise or lower in less than 10 seconds.
