Introduction
A full-size family sedan, the 2014 Toyota Avalon competes against the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Ford Taurus, Hyundai Azera, Kia Cadenza, and Nissan Maxima.

Models and Features
Toyota offers the 2014 Avalon in XLE and Limited trim levels, the former further segmented into standard, Premium, and Touring sub-trims. Additionally, the car is available with a V-6 engine or a hybrid powertrain.

Upgrading to the XLE Premium version adds a power sunroof, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a universal garage door opener. The XLE Touring takes the equipment level a step further with 18-in. aluminum wheels, fog lights, paddle shifters, and driving modes including Eco, Normal, and Sport. Additionally, the XLE Touring features memory for the driver's settings, a navigation system, and Entune App Suite technology.

Choose the Avalon Limited for HID headlights with LED running lights, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with puddle lighting, rain-sensing wipers, and aluminum door sill scuff plates. Inside, the Avalon Limited includes perforated premium leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, power-extending driver's seat cushion, 8-way power-adjustable front passenger's seat, heated rear seats, and triple-zone climate control. A hard-disc navigation system with a larger 7-in. display screen is also included for this trim level, along with a premium audio system, Entune App Suite with data services technology, power rear window sunshade, and special White Ice ambient lighting.

The Avalon Limited also has several safety features as standard equipment, including a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect technology with one free year of services including roadside assistance, SOS Emergency Assistance, automatic collision notification, stolen-vehicle locator, and more.

Options and Packages
Toyota offers no factory-installed options for the standard Avalon XLE. The only upgrades for this car are added by the dealership. The XLE Premium can be optioned with a navigation system and Entune App Suite, while the XLE Touring is available with a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.

A Technology package is exclusively available for the Avalon Limited. It contains automatic high-beam headlights, a dynamic radar cruise control system, pre-collision system, and an eBin storage tray with wireless device charging capability.

Under the Hood
A 3.5-liter V-6 engine is standard for the 2014 Toyota Avalon, generating 268 horsepower that is delivered to the car's front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Avalon Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor, nickel-metal hydride battery pack, continuously variable transmission, and a regenerative braking system. The net horsepower rating is 200, and the Avalon Hybrid can operate at low speeds and for short distances purely on electricity, according to Toyota.

Fuel Economy
The Avalon Hybrid might not be powerful, but it is fuel-efficient. The car's EPA fuel-economy rating is 40 mpg in combined driving. Compare that with the Avalon with the V-6 engine, which is expected to get 24 mpg or 25 mpg in combined driving, depending on how the car is equipped.

Safety Ratings and Technology
The 2014 Toyota Avalon receives an overall rating of 5 stars (out of 5 stars) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and "Good" ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in its battery of tests. Note, however, that the IIHS has not evaluated the Avalon in the small overlap frontal-impact test.

Every 2014 Avalon is equipped with 10 air bags and Toyota's Smart Stop Technology, which is designed to prevent unintended acceleration by making it impossible for the car to accelerate as long as the driver is pressing on the brake pedal. In order to obtain the Avalon's optional blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert system, buyers must choose the XLE Touring or the Limited version. Exclusive safety features for the Limited include Safety Connect services and a pre-collision system.
