Overview

The front-wheel-drive Avalon, the largest sedan in Toyota's model lineup, is now in its third generation. It was last redesigned for the 2005 model year. In 2008, the Avalon received a minor refresh and was fitted with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Touring model was dropped for 2009. With the exception of a new exterior color, the Avalon is a carryover for 2010.

Toyota's flagship sedan, the Avalon is a full-size model that seats 5 occupants. It offers a well equipped base trim and a wide range of options. Save for a redesigned gas pedal and automatic up-down functions on the rear windows, the 2010 model is a carryover from the previous year. Its selling points include its safety ratings, roomy interior, and quiet ride, according to Toyota. The Avalon's main competitors include the Ford Taurus and Buick LaCrosse.

The entry-level Avalon XL trim features 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, automatic headlights, reclining rear seats, and a 9-speaker sound system. The Avalon XLS trim provides 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, sunroof, and upgraded mirrors and lights. The Avalon Limited trim takes the windows and lights to another level (including Xenon headlights) and adds keyless entry and ignition, heated and ventilated front seats, more power accessories, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 12-speaker JBL stereo, plus optional adaptive cruise control. Various option packages and stand-alone enhancements are available, including a voice-activated navigation system. The Avalon's trunk provides 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space, according to the manufacturer.

The 2010 Toyota Avalon's standard power plant is a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. A 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are also standard.

Standard safety features on the 2010 Toyota Avalon include anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, active front head restraints, front side air bags, driver's knee air bag, and side curtain air bags. In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Avalon received 5 (out of 5) stars in all front- and side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Avalon the highest-possible "Good" ratings in frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
