  • Available gas/electric hybrid powertrain

Exterior Features
The 2013 Toyota Avalon is a 5-passenger sedan built on the same vehicle platform as the 2013 Lexus ES. Completely redesigned for 2013, the new Avalon is offered with a V-6 engine or a gas/electric hybrid powertrain, in XLE, XLE Premium, XLE Touring, and Limited trim levels. Standard equipment includes heated power exterior mirrors with turn signal repeaters, LED taillights, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Interior Features
The 2013 Toyota Avalon is equipped with standard leather upholstery, heated front seats, 8-way power driver seat, 4-way power passenger seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control. New IntelliTouch capacitive touch controls are standard, as well as a color 6.1-inch Display Audio touch-screen radio and a Smart Key entry system with push-button ignition.

Optional Features
The 2013 Toyota Avalon XLE Premium trim level adds expanded Smart Key operation, reversing camera, auto-dimming rearview mirror with a compass, universal garage door opener, and a power sunroof. The Avalon Hybrid model also gains Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes.

The XLE Touring version is equipped with 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, and paddle shifters. Inside, the Avalon XLE Touring offers memory for the driver's seat and mirror positions, upgraded sound system, navigation system, and Toyota's Entune smartphone connectivity technology. A blind-spot monitoring system and a cross-traffic alert system are also standard on this trim level, and versions equipped with the V-6 engine have Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes.

The Avalon Limited trim level includes high-intensity discharge headlights, LED running lights, rain-sensing wipers, and auto-dimming exterior mirrors with puddle lights. Inside, the Limited trim offers perforated leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, 10-way power driver seat, 8-way power passenger seat, rear window sunshade, and ambient cabin lighting. Triple-zone automatic climate control is standard, and the Limited is equipped with a larger, high-resolution infotainment system screen, JBL Synthesis premium audio system, and Safety Connect telematics with Automatic Collision Notification service.

A Tech package is optional on the Limited trim level. It includes a dynamic radar cruise control system, Pre-Collision System and automatic high-beam headlights.

Under the Hood
The non-hybrid version of the 2013 Toyota Avalon is equipped with a standard 3.5-liter V-6 generating 268 horsepower, driving the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Avalon Hybrid offers the same gas/electric hybrid powertrain found in the Toyota Camry Hybrid, combining a 2.5-liter, Atkinson-cycle, 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric assist motor, nickel-metal hydride battery pack, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Total system output measures 200 horsepower, and the Avalon Hybrid is what is known as a "full hybrid," which means it can operate at low speeds on battery power alone.

Fuel Economy
As this overview is written, the EPA has not published official fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Toyota Avalon. Toyota says the new Avalon will achieve the following fuel economy:

  • Avalon V-6: 21/31/25 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Avalon Hybrid: 40/39/40 mpg

Safety
The 2013 Toyota Avalon is equipped with 10 standard air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction control, stability control, and a Smart Stop brake override system that is designed to make it impossible for the car to accelerate with the brake pedal pressed.

Optional safety features for the 2013 Avalon include rain-sensing wipers, reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring system, cross-traffic alert system, Safety Connect telematics with Automatic Collision Notification service, and dynamic cruise control with a Pre-Collision System.

As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 Avalon.
