Exterior Features
The 2013 Toyota 4Runner is a midsize, body-on-frame SUV designed for off-road travel and capable of carrying 7 passengers. The 4Runner is sold in SR5, Trail and Limited trim levels.

Standard equipment for the 4Runner SR5 includes 17-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators and puddle lamps, wiper de-icer grid, and dark-tinted rear window glass. Choose the available 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system, and the SR5 trim adds underbody skid plates.

Interior Features
The 2013 Toyota 4Runner SR5 is equipped with standard air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, power windows with automatic up/down operation for all windows, tailgate window that powers down, and an 8-speaker stereo with Bluetooth streaming audio, satellite radio, USB port, iPod connection, and a "party mode" for tailgate parties. Additionally, the SR5 offers a height-adjustable driver seat, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, trip computer, and a universal garage door opener.

Optional Features
A Convenience package is optional for the 2013 4Runner SR5, adding power front seats, power sunroof, and front and rear 120-volt power outlets. A Premium package adds leather seats, heated front seats, and a touch-screen infotainment system with HD Radio, iTunes tagging capability, navigation system, and Entune mobile application services accessed through a paired smartphone. Additional options include a sliding rear cargo deck, auto-dimming rearview mirror, reversing camera, split-folding third-row seat, and automatic running boards.

The 4Runner Trail includes 4WD and is designed specifically for off-road adventures. It is equipped with unique 17-inch aluminum wheels, all-terrain tires, mudguards, full-size spare tire, locking rear differential, active traction control system, and something Toyota calls CRAWL, which is a low-range gear with multiple speed settings for easier maneuvering on difficult terrain. A separate Multi-Terrain Select feature maximizes traction on a variety of paved- and off-road surfaces.

The Trail trim level is set apart from the SR5 by black exterior trim, smoked headlights and taillights, and a hood scoop. The cabin is equipped with water-resistant upholstery, 8-way power driver's seat, upgraded gauge illumination, dual 120-volt power outlets, sliding trunk tray that holds up to 440 pounds, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a reversing camera. Options for the Trail version include the touch-screen infotainment and navigation system with Entune technology, and a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that provides greater wheel articulation by disconnecting the front and rear stabilizer bars when traveling off-road at slow speeds.

Like the 4Runner SR5, the 4Runner Limited is offered with rear-wheel drive (2WD) or 4WD. The Limited trim, however, includes 20-inch aluminum wheels, auto-damping suspension, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, heated front seats, keyless access and push-button ignition, and a touch-screen HD Radio with navigation and Entune services.

A full-time 4WD system is optional on this version, and includes a locking center differential. Additional extras include a premium sound system, sliding rear cargo deck, and a third-row seat.

Under the Hood
The only engine offered in the 2013 4Runner is a 4.0-liter V-6 generating 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the rear or to all four wheels. The 4Runner's maximum towing capacity measures 5,000 pounds.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Toyota 4Runner are:

  • 4Runner 2WD: 17/22/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • 4Runner 4WD: 17/21/18 mpg

Safety
The 2013 4Runner is equipped with 8 air bags, including knee air bags for the driver and front passenger. Traction control, stability control (with multi-terrain tuning on Trail models), hill-start assist control, 4-wheel ventilated-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and rear clearance sensors are standard. Toyota's Smart Stop technology is also standard. The system is designed to make it impossible for the SUV to accelerate when the brake pedal is depressed.

Models with 4WD have downhill assist control, and the 4Runner SR5 can be equipped with a reversing camera that comes standard on the Trail and Limited trims. The 4Runner Limited also includes a 1-year subscription to Toyota's Safety Connect telematics system, which offers Automatic Collision Notification and an SOS button.

In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2013 4Runner received a 4-star (out of 5) overall crash-test rating. However, rollover resistance is rated 3 stars and front passenger frontal-impact protection is rated 3 Stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2013 4Runner as this overview is written. However, the structurally identical 2012 model was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute.
