  • Standard tire-pressure-monitoring system

  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS) optional

  • Automatic transmission optional

  • Bluetooth connectivity optional
Introduced in 2005, the front-wheel-drive (FWD), 4-door, 5-passenger Suzuki Reno compact hatchback sedan returns this year as carryover from the 2007 model. There are a coupee of changes, including steering-wheel-mounted audio controls with the Convenience package, availability of an automatic transmission, and Bluetooth connectivity. The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is the same one used in the Forenza. Larger inside than some competitors, Reno is competitively priced, Suzuki says.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Suzuki Reno is available as the base model or with the Convenience package, both with standard 5-speed manual transmission; speed-sensitive, power-assisted, rack-and-pinion steering; floor mats; air conditioning; 4-speaker, AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3/WMA playback and auxiliary jack; power windows/locks/mirrors; 15-inch steel wheels with full covers; heated outside mirrors; rear window defroster; and trunk light. With the Convenience package, Reno adds remote keyless entry with vehicle security system and panic alarm; steering-wheel-mounted audio controls; and cruise control. An automatic transmission is optional on both models, and 4-wheel ABS is optional with Convenience package only.

The 2008 Suzuki Reno is powered by a 2.0-liter, 16-valve, dual overhead cam (DOHC) 4-cylinder engine that generates 127 hp at 5600 rpm and 131 lb.-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm. Power gets transferred to the wheels via standard 5-speed manual transmission, or optional 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Four-wheel independent suspension and front-ventilated 4-wheel disc brakes are standard (ABS is optional with Convenience package), but there's no traction or stability control system available. Fuel economy for the 2008 Suzuki Reno is EPA-estimated at 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway (manual transmission), and 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway (automatic transmission).

The 2008 Suzuki Reno's safety features include dual-stage driver and weight-sensing front-passenger air bags; front-seat-mounted, side-impact air bags; height-adjustable front safety belts with pre-tensioners; headrests and 3-point safety belts for all five seating positions; rear child-seat LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system; rear-door child safety locks; daytime running lights; tire-pressure-monitoring system; and available ABS (with Convenience package).

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Suzuki Reno receives a 4-star rating for frontal, side-impact and rollover tests. However, the agency notes a safety concern with the rear-seat side-impact test, stating: "During the side-impact test, the head of the left rear passenger dummy struck the C-pillar, causing a high head acceleration. Head-impact events resulting in high accelerations have a higher likelihood of serious head trauma."

The 2008 Suzuki Reno includes a 4-speaker, AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3/WMA playback and auxiliary jack as standard equipment, along with 12-volt accessory sockets. Remote keyless entry with vehicle security system and panic alarm is standard with the Convenience package.
