What's New for 2014:

  • Hybrid model joins the lineup
  • Available infotainment system

Introduction
The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek is a 5-passenger, all-wheel-drive (AWD) 5-door hatchback available in four trim levels with power coming from a traditional gasoline or new hybrid powertrain. It is essentially an Impreza riding on a raised suspension. Competitors include the Ford C-Max hybrid, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mini Cooper Countryman, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Nissan Juke, and the Toyota Prius V.

Models and Features
All versions of the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek are delivered well-equipped. That includes the base 2.0i Premium, which boasts standard Bluetooth connectivity, USB and auxiliary input jacks, heated mirrors and front seats, cruise control, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and 17-in. alloy wheels. A more upscale experience can be had with the 2.0i Limited trim level, thanks to its automatic climate control system, upgraded audio with a 4.3-in. display screen and iTunes tagging capability, HD Radio service, rearview camera, and leather upholstery.

The XV Crosstrek Hybrid is also available in two trim levels--Hybrid and Hybrid Touring--but they are upgraded with active grille shutters and other aerodynamic tweaks, as well as LED taillights, specifically tuned suspension, push-button start, and unique gauges. Both feature the rearview camera, while the Hybrid Touring ups the ante just a bit more by adding leather upholstery, power tilt/slide moonroof, and a 6.1-in. touch-screen navigation system.

Options and Packages
That navigation unit is offered as optional equipment on the XV Crosstrek 2.0i Premium and Limited versions. More than just an electronic atlas, this bit of technology bundles together 6-speaker audio, text-messaging capability, voice controls, and Aha smartphone integration, which transforms the system into an iPhone or Android touchpad.

Under the Hood
Most versions of the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek are fitted with a Boxer-style, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. Buyers have their choice of a 5-speed manual gearbox featuring hill-start assist or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The new-for-2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid also utilizes the 2.0-liter engine and CVT, though they're accompanied by an electric motor, 13.5-kW nickel-metal hydride battery, and an electric EV driving mode. Net output measures 160 horsepower and 163 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, XV Crosstreks equipped with the standard manual transmission should average 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, figures that rise to 25 and 33 mpg, respectively, when the CVT is selected in lieu of the 5-speed stick-shift.

As expected, fuel-economy ratings for the new XV Crosstrek Hybrid are the best of the bunch, though the margin isn't considerable. Drivers of this variant can anticipate recording 29 mpg around town and 33 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek received an overall rating of 5 (out of 5) stars. In tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 XV Crosstrek received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--in all categories; the 2014 XV Crosstrek was also named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute.

Standard safety features on the 2014 XV Crosstrek include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, 7 air bags, and front active head restraints.
