Under the Hood
The Subaru Tribeca is equipped with a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine that generates 256 horsepower. A 5-speed automatic transmission puts the power to the ground through a Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) version of Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Under normal conditions, power flows in a 45:55 front-to-rear split. When the Tribeca's wheels start to slip, VTD automatically apportions power as it sees fit.
The Tribeca provides 8.4 inches of ground clearance and, when properly equipped, it can tow up to 3,500 pounds.Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Subaru Tribeca are 16/21/18 mpg (city/highway/combined).Safety
In addition to 6 air bags, traction and stability control, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, the 2013 Subaru Tribeca is equipped with a Ring-Shaped Frame Reinforcement body structure designed to deflect crash energy away from the passenger cabin in a collision.
For 2013, the Tribeca also has a new Brake Override system that is designed to make it impossible to accelerate if the brake pedal is pressed. A reversing camera is optional, and dealers can install reversing sensors in the Tribeca's rear bumper.
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the 2013 Tribeca's crash-test performance. Last year, the structurally identical 2012 model was called a "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS.
