Overview

The Subaru Outback is a mid-size crossover sport utility vehicle that was first introduced in 1995, when the automaker modified its Legacy station wagon with a taller ride height and body cladding. Now in its fourth-generation and last completely redesigned for 2009, the automaker has added a rearview camera to the options list for 2011

The Subaru Outback is offered in six trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5 Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R, 3.6 Premium, and 3.6R Limited. The number in the name refers to the engine, while the letter references the equipment level. Entry-level models are configured with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, full power accessories, automatic headlights, roof rails, cruise control, 16-inch steel wheels, and more. Premium models build on that equipment list with rear privacy glass, eight-way power driver seat, fog lights, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Limited trim is fitted with an upgraded Harmon-Kardon audio system, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery and more. The Outback is offered with two engine choices. The standard powerplant is a 2.5-liter, horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine rated at 170 horsepower. It's mated to a six-speed manual transmission, or an optional continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT). The optional engine is a 3.6-liter, horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine that's rated at 256 horsepower. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard. All Subaru models are fitted with full time all-wheel drive as standard equipment. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Subaru Outback between 18 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, depending on engine choice

The 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i starts with a base price of about $24,000 and tops out with the 3.6R, which starts around $32,000.
